Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is seeking experienced, motivated, and dynamic leaders and educators to participate in the design and delivery of a novel four-year medical school curriculum grounded in the tenets of whole health. About The Position AWSOM is seeking applicants for a non-tenure track department chair of medical education. The role of chair will be up to 0.2 FTE, and combined with teaching the position is for 1.0 FTE. The department chair will provide visionary leadership, administrative oversight, and sound mentoring for the Medical Education department. The department chair serves at the interface of faculty and admin to facilitate efforts ensuring excellence in UME. This position requires an individual with a proven background in medical education, a commitment to academic excellence, and an ability to foster a collaborative and innovative learning environment. The department chair will hold a pivotal leadership role within the institution and will report to the Dean. The department chair will be expected to actively teach within the non-clerkship portions of the curriculum as pertinent to specialty. Key Responsibilities Provide visionary leadership for the Department of Medical Education (DME), setting academic and administrative priorities to accomplish the mission of the department. Devise a strategic plan for the department aligned with the school mission, with a budget that is managed responsibly and updated annually. Participate in the hiring process of faculty members. Actively teach within your content area and contribute to the education and mentoring of medical students. Collaborate with academic administration on the annual performance appraisal cycle of the department, and the corresponding annual faculty evaluations. Support all DME operational activities in medical education, including research, faculty development, program development, and process improvement across the education spectrum. Together with course directors and the Office of Curricular Affairs develop quality improvement diagnostics and skills remediation programs for faculty. Collaborate with AWSOM leadership/administration to advise new educational initiatives, promote innovation in educational scholarship, and support continuous quality improvement. Collaborate with administrators, faculty, and staff to develop and implement departmental policies and procedures. Be involved in establishing a faculty member mentorship program in educational scholarship and academic medicine career development. Identify and support external funding and philanthropic opportunities to support the DME. Collaborate with others in our ecosystem (the Whole Health Institute, Crystal Bridges, The Momentary and Art Bridges). Minimum Qualifications MD, DO, or PhD in a relevant field. Greater than ten (10) years of experience in undergraduate medical education in LCME or COCA accredited medical school. Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role in an academic setting, preferably a school of medicine. Experience chairing medical school committees. Active participation in the faculty promotion process. Active involvement in providing faculty development. Record of success in effective faculty mentoring. Greater than two (2) years of course director experience within medical education, including curriculum and assessment development and implementation. Recognized excellence in the delivery of medical education. Experience designing, delivering, and evaluating integrated foundational science courses with a human health emphasis. Substantial knowledge and experience regarding program evaluation, instructional design, learner assessment, and educational technology. Sustained scholarly contributions to the field of medicine and medical education. Familiarity with accreditation standards for medical education programs. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical education. Experience in new endeavors (e.g., curriculum development, new degree tract, creating/founding departments, research programs, etc.) Well-developed leadership, interpersonal communication, and team-building skills. Competence in time management such as managing multiple projects simultaneously for different stakeholders and meeting project deadlines. Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a diverse and rapid-paced academic medical environment. Founded in 2021 by philanthropist Alice Walton, the School of Medicine will offer a medical degree-granting program that builds on conventional medicine with an inclusive, compassionate, and whole health approach. The School of Medicine embraces self-care to empower students to care for their patients and themselves and helps them rise to the health challenges of the 21st century with a focus on mental, physical, social, and emotional health. The School will have an attached clinic for training in these concepts. Currently, the School of Medicine seeks to be a national medical school with the goal of welcoming its inaugural class in 2025, pending programmatic and institutional accreditation. Construction of the 154,000 square-foot building has begun with the goal of completing and welcoming the first class in Fall 2025, pending accreditation. AWSOM will be located east of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
