AWARE serves survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. This summer, we're hiring a caring individual to develop fun activities and outings for AWARE children and families.
This temporary position includes flexible work hours and days.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Plan and facilitate summer outings, events and celebrations for AWARE’s children and families. Ensure inclusion of current AWARE residents and, as appropriate, prior AWARE participants, families living at Kaasei and those enrolled in Rapid Rehousing.
· Provide child advocacy emphasizing the whole child, developing self- esteem, communication skills, problem solving techniques, and appropriate expression of feelings.
· Provide emotional support and guidance to children and their families. Work with parents to support and enhance parenting skills.
· Coordinate and collaborate with community providers- social workers, schools, healthcare professionals, and other relevant agencies to meet children’s individual physical, emotional, and mental health needs. Track progress and ensure follow up in and out of shelter.
· Apply teachable moments throughout the day, providing child residents with information on body awareness, personal boundaries, safe and unsafe touch, assertiveness skills, awareness of feelings/expressing them appropriately, self-esteem, anger and problem solving, domestic violence, keeping safe at home/support systems, chemical dependency, family, separation and divorce.
· Monitor and care for children when their parent is working with AWARE or partner staff, or at appointed times during the week.
· Provide educational support as needed.
· Provide assistance/accompaniment for families working with the Office of Children’s Services. Ensure safety planning and trauma-informed interventions.
· Support and work in partnership with volunteers working in the children’s program.
· Ensure shelter child designated areas are clean and organized and address any community living issues.
· Ensure children’s issues are addressed as needed in advocacy meetings.
· Agreement with and adherence to AWARE’s foundational practices of service and welcome for survivors. This includes our “screen in, not out” practice in performing intakes/orientations, as well as non-discrimination for any survivor in a protected class and/or experiencing behavioral health issues.
· Provide program participants with basic information on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (DV/SA) including dynamics of abuse, sexual assault, lethality assessments, and safety planning.
· Demonstrate trauma-informed service readiness, including recognition of common trauma responses and their presentation (behaviors, words, tone of voice, etc.), and respond appropriately.
· Recognize emergencies and act to ensure participant and staff safety. Use de-escalation techniques to defuse tense situations. If needed, request law enforcement assistance and be able to provide critical information to law enforcement. Ensure notification of the manager on call and documentation for staff.
· Demonstrate an ability to self-regulate and an awareness of internal reactions to trauma. Practice regular self and community care to mitigate secondary trauma.
