Engineering Manager

We are looking for an experienced ATEX / Ex Engineering Team Lead to join a growing testing, inspection and certification organisation.

This is a senior technical leadership role for an experienced ATEX / Explosive Atmospheres professional who can provide technical direction to the engineering team while remaining close to the technical work and customer requirements.

You will lead a team of engineers working across ATEX, IECEx and hazardous area requirements, supporting customers with product assessment, technical evaluations, certification and compliance.

We are looking for someone who is technically strong, commercially aware and confident leading engineers, with the ability to take ownership of complex technical questions and provide day-to-day guidance to the wider team.

The Role

You will be responsible for the technical leadership of the ATEX / Ex engineering team, ensuring projects are delivered to a high technical standard and supporting engineers with complex technical and compliance questions.

The core areas will include:

• Technical leadership of the ATEX / Ex engineering team
• Day-to-day technical support and guidance for engineers
• ATEX and IECEx product assessment and certification
• Explosive atmospheres and hazardous area requirements
• Review and interpretation of applicable standards and regulations
• Technical review of designs, documentation and test results
• Supporting engineers with complex technical assessments
• Reviewing and approving technical reports and certification documentation
• Identifying and resolving technical and compliance issues
• Working directly with customers on technical requirements and project challenges
• Supporting the development of technical procedures and engineering processes
• Ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, accurately and in line with relevant requirements
• Supporting the development and capability of the wider engineering team

You will primarily work across the ATEX and IECEx frameworks, with strong knowledge of relevant standards for equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres.

Experience with standards and requirements relating to areas such as IEC 60079, equipment protection concepts and hazardous area classification would be highly valuable.

About You

We are looking for someone with:

• Several years of hands-on experience in ATEX / Ex, hazardous area engineering, testing or certification
• Strong technical knowledge of ATEX and/or IECEx requirements
• Strong understanding of IEC 60079 series standards
• Experience assessing equipment for use in explosive atmospheres
• Experience interpreting standards and applying requirements to real products
• Experience reviewing technical documentation, designs, test results and certification requirements
• The technical confidence to act as a point of escalation for engineers
• Previous experience leading, mentoring or technically supervising engineers
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• The ability to manage multiple technical projects and priorities
• Strong communication skills and the confidence to work directly with customers
• A practical and commercially aware approach to technical problem solving

Experience within a TIC, testing laboratory, certification body, hazardous area consultancy or similar compliance environment would be highly advantageous.

We are particularly interested in candidates who combine strong technical ATEX / Ex expertise with genuine team leadership experience, rather than someone whose experience is purely managerial or purely laboratory-based.
