Position Summary

Avery County Schools is seeking a caring, dependable, and student-centered Exceptional Children (EC) Bus Monitor to provide supervision and assistance to students with disabilities during morning and afternoon bus transportation. The EC Bus Monitor plays a vital role in ensuring students are transported safely while providing support based on each student's individual needs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist students with safely boarding and exiting the bus.
  • Supervise students during transportation to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
  • Support students with physical, behavioral, communication, and medical needs as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), transportation plans, or health plans.
  • Assist students with seat belts, safety harnesses, wheelchair securements, and other adaptive equipment as needed.
  • Monitor student behavior and implement approved behavior support strategies.
  • Maintain communication with the bus driver regarding student needs and safety concerns.
  • Follow district procedures for emergency evacuations and crisis situations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student information.
  • Build positive relationships with students and families.
  • Attend required training, including CPI (if applicable), safety procedures, and district transportation training.
  • Report concerns, incidents, or injuries promptly to the appropriate supervisor.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience working with children or individuals with disabilities is preferred.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lift, assist, and support students with mobility needs when necessary.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with bus drivers, school staff, and families.

  • Demonstrates patience, compassion, and professionalism.
  • Understands the importance of student safety and confidentiality.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Ability to manage student behavior in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Dependable, punctual, and flexible.

Work Schedule

  • Morning and afternoon bus routes
  • School days only
  • Additional training may be required before or during the school year.

Reports To

  • Transportation Director
  • Exceptional Children Director (regarding student support needs)
