What are the responsibilities and job description for the VP, Data Science & Engineering position at Averity?
VP, Data Science & Engineering | PE-Focused Data & Analytics Firm
The Opportunity
Our client is an early-stage data and analytics firm based in Dumbo, Brooklyn, working with private equity firms and their middle-market portfolio companies. They turn messy, fragmented operational and financial data into reliable, connected ecosystems that drive real business value — not dashboards for dashboards' sake.
They're profitable, founder-led, and growing fast. More client demand than they can handle. Now they're hiring the person who will build the data science & engineering function from the ground up.
This is the first senior data hire after the two co-founders and Chief of Staff. You'll start as a hands-on IC and grow into leading a team of ~10 over the next year.
Why This Role Is Different
- Real ownership from day one. You'll shape the IP, standards, tooling, and hiring roadmap — not inherit someone else's stack
- Profitable company, no VC pressure. Revenue funds the business. You're building, not burning
- Founders who sell themselves. Sharp, ambitious, articulate operators with deep investing and business backgrounds. The Chief of Staff joined because of them — you probably will too
- Title flexibility. VP is the posted title, but they're hiring for talent first and shaping the role around the right person
- Path to leadership. You'll likely manage a team by end of year one
What You'll Do
- Design and build SQL- and Python-based data workflows end-to-end
- Develop robust ETL/ELT pipelines and orchestration processes
- Model data in Snowflake and connect it across ERP, CRM, finance, and ops systems via APIs, exports, and manual loads
- Wrangle messy, real-world operational and financial data into something trustworthy
- Partner directly with PE clients and their portfolio companies to translate business context into data solutions
- Support analytics and BI use cases on top of the data you engineer
- Help build internal IP, including AI-driven workflows on top of structured datasets
- Shape templates, standards, and best practices for the team you'll eventually hire
What We're Looking For
- 4–10 years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or data science
- Advanced SQL — complex queries, modeling, performance tuning
- Strong Python for data processing and pipeline development
- Hands-on experience building and orchestrating production data pipelines
- Snowflake experience strongly preferred
- Comfort working across APIs and integrating systems securely
- Ability to operate independently and own problems end-to-end
- Strong communicator — comfortable with both engineers and non-technical business stakeholders
- Entrepreneurial mindset and genuine interest in building from the ground floor
- Comfortable with ambiguity and early-stage chaos
Nice to Have
- Exposure to financial or operational data (especially PE-backed company data)
- Consulting or client-facing experience
- Genuine interest in applied AI tools and agentic workflows
Logistics
- Location: Dumbo, Brooklyn — Hybrid (your choice of how many days that looks like)
- Team: Currently 3 (two co-founders Chief of Staff). You'll be employee #4 and a key early hire
- Compensation: Open-ended and flexible mix of base salary and equity. They're building this offer around the right person, not slotting you into a band.
Salary : $200,000 - $300,000
