Responsibilities
- Prepare treatment areas by sterilizing instruments, setting up dental tools, and ensuring all equipment is functioning properly.
- Assist dentists during a variety of procedures including general dentistry, prosthodontics, endodontics, and pediatric dentistry.
- Take and develop X-rays and medical imaging to aid in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Manage patient records using electronic medical record (EMR) systems such as Dentrix, Eaglesoft, or Epic, ensuring all documentation complies with HIPAA regulations.
- Gather and record vital signs and medical history to support safe treatment planning.
- Provide chairside assistance by handing instruments, suctioning, and maintaining a clear, sterile environment through aseptic techniques.
- Educate patients on dental procedures, post-treatment care, and oral hygiene practices to promote health literacy.
- Support infection control protocols by following strict sterilization procedures and maintaining a clean clinical environment.
- Collaborate with the dental team in four-handed dentistry to improve efficiency during procedures.
- Assist with medical documentation and coding for insurance claims or medical records management related to dental treatments.
- Support the dental receptionist by managing appointment scheduling, patient check-in/out processes, and answering patient inquiries promptly.
- Use advanced tools like 3D scanners when necessary for comprehensive diagnostics or treatment planning in complex cases.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Dental Assistant in a busy dental clinic environment with knowledge of general dentistry procedures.
- Proficiency with EMR systems such as Dentrix, Eaglesoft, or Epic; familiarity with medical coding and documentation standards is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of dental terminology, anatomy knowledge, infection control practices, and aseptic techniques.
- Ability to operate dental imaging equipment including X-ray machines and 3D scanners safely and effectively.
- Knowledge of pediatric dentistry principles to assist with young patients comfortably and effectively.
- Excellent communication skills to educate patients clearly about procedures and post-care instructions.
- Certification in radiography or X-ray technology required; additional certifications in pediatric dentistry or prosthodontics are a plus.
- Ability to take vital signs accurately and support emergency response protocols when needed.
- Familiarity with HIPAA regulations to ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
