Position Summary
The Staff Development Coordinator / Infection Preventionist is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing staff education and infection prevention programs within the facility. This role ensures that all clinical staff receive ongoing training to maintain high standards of resident care while maintaining compliance with state, federal, and facility infection control regulations.
The SDC/IP monitors infection trends, develops prevention strategies, and ensures staff competency through orientation, continuing education, and clinical training programs.
Key Responsibilities
Staff Development & Education
Coordinate and conduct new employee orientation for nursing staff.
Develop and implement ongoing education and competency programs for clinical staff.
Provide in-service training related to nursing care, safety, infection prevention, and regulatory updates.
Maintain education records and competency documentation for all nursing personnel.
Identify training needs based on quality indicators, survey results, and clinical outcomes.
Support leadership development for charge nurses and unit managers.
Infection Prevention & Control
Develop, implement, and maintain the facility’s Infection Prevention and Control Program.
Conduct infection surveillance and tracking of healthcare-associated infections.
Monitor and report infection trends and outbreaks.
Ensure compliance with CDC, CMS, and state infection control guidelines.
Educate staff on proper hand hygiene, PPE usage, isolation precautions, and infection control procedures.
Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
Participate in Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) meetings.
Assist with survey readiness and regulatory compliance.
Maintain required infection control documentation and reports.
Conduct audits for hand hygiene, PPE use, and infection control practices.
Policy & Procedure Development
Assist in developing and updating infection prevention policies and staff training materials.
Ensure all clinical staff follow facility clinical and safety protocols.
Qualifications
Education
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred
Licensure
Active Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license (per state regulations)
Experience
Minimum 2–3 years of nursing experience in long-term care or skilled nursing
Experience in staff education, training, or infection prevention preferred
Certifications (Preferred)
Infection Prevention certification such as CIC (Certification in Infection Control) or training through CDC/Nursing Home Infection Prevention programs
