JOB SUMMARY:

The Monitor Technician/Unit Secretary under general supervision of the Director, and in collaboration with other health care professionals, ensure continuous monitoring of cardiac rhythms by observing cardiac monitors; maintain all records and reports of rhythm strips in accordance with the established nursing standards and procedures. They perform clerical duties to maintain an organized area and allow medical staff to focus on patient care. They also maintain a line of communication between the patient and clinical staff. Any position that has direct patient care is considered to be safety sensitive by Avem Health Partners standards.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for monitoring the patient once nursing staff have attached patient to the telemetry unit.
  • Check for accurate date/time printout on rhythm strips.
  • Provide daily printings of each patient’s rhythm strip.
  • Maintain appropriate alarm settings for each patient.
  • Assist in troubleshooting monitor equipment.
  • Alert staff when a patient is in crisis.
  • Admit new patients and code telemetry charges into computer system.
  • Maintain supplies for monitor area.
  • Assist with orientation/cross-training of new personnel on the unit. Act as a mentor and/or resource person to new or developing employees.
  • Answer phones and call lights.
  • Schedule appointments as needed.

  • Provide immediate information to nursing personnel of change in cardiac monitor status. Notify Clinical Coordinator and follow established policy.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of practice and overall function of this position.

  • Demonstrate excellent work attendance and attend and actively participate in a variety of meetings and training sessions as required.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • One (1) year experience performing work related to patient care in a healthcare setting, six (6) months of which must have included experience as a monitor technician OR successful completion of a training program OR an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

 

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

  • Current BLS (or obtained within 30 days).
