JOB PURPOSE:
Supervises the technical activities of assigned clinical laboratory areas. Provides input into development of departmental policies and procedures, participates in the development of new technical procedures, and ensures laboratory personnel maintain current knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, and equipment operation. Oversees quality control program to ensure high quality diagnostic testing and all laboratory activities comply with organization and regulatory agency standards. Any position that has direct patient care is considered to be safety sensitive by Avem Health Partners’ standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Responsible for the daily operations of the Clinical Laboratory including staff performing testing and reporting test results maintains policies and procedures and quality control practices in the Clinical Laboratory.
- Monitors test analysis and specimen examinations to maintain acceptable levels of analytic performance.
- Is on-site providing direct supervision when high-complexity testing is performed or reviews the work within 24 hours.
- Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.
- Maintains a good working relationship within the departments and with other hospital departments. Maintains effective physician and interdepartmental communications.
- Responsible for quality control procedures and instrument checks.
- Maintains laboratory records.
- Follows standard precautions. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Evaluates staff in accordance with performance standards in histology, biochemistry, microbiology, hematology, serology, cytology and blood bank.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Maintains established hospital and departmental policies, procedures and objectives; maintains the department’s continuous quality improvement, safety, environmental, and infection prevention and control, and compliance with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
- Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies; develops an inventory system; oversees cost control measures in the utilization of department supplies, materials, equipment and staff.
- Establishes and monitors criteria for the immediate notification of the practitioner responsible for the patient, when critical limits of specified test results are exceeded; implements corrective actions as required.
- Maintains contact with physicians to solicit appropriate input; identified problems are addressed in a timely manner.
- Other duties as assigned within scope of practice.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Physical, Biology or Chemistry.
- 3 years laboratory experience.
- 1 year supervisory experience preferred.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:
- MT-ASCP certification required.
- Current BLS (or obtained within 30 days of hire).
