Role Overview:
AVD Workforce Connect LLC is sourcing on behalf of a client who is hiring a Senior Histology Technician for a direct-hire, full-time W-2 position based onsite in South Burlington, Vermont.
This is a senior, hands-on histology role designed for an experienced professional who values technical ownership, autonomy, and consistency in their day-to-day work. You will play a key role in supporting diagnostic tissue preparation in a newly launched laboratory environment, with the opportunity to help establish reliable workflows and best practices from the ground up.
Senior Histology Technicians in this role are trusted to work independently, deliver high-quality histology output, and serve as a steady technical presence as the laboratory ramps up operations.

This Client is a Medical and Diagnostic Laboratories organization specializing in digital pathology and sub-specialty diagnostic services. The organization partners with physician practices, physician-owned laboratories, hospitals, and healthcare systems nationwide.
The Client’s mission is to improve patient care and outcomes by delivering advanced sub-specialty diagnostics and state-of-the-art technology. Services include digital pathology diagnostics, hospital pathology support, and affordable digital pathology software solutions provided without any capital investment, supporting modern and efficient laboratory workflows.
As part of continued expansion, the Client is launching a new laboratory location in Vermont and is seeking a highly autonomous professional to support both technical and operational success.

Key Responsibilities:
Hands-On Histology
- Perform histology procedures, including tissue processing support, embedding, microtomy, staining (routine and special stains), slide preparation, and quality review.
- Cut sections of body tissues for microscopic examination using microtomes.
- Embed tissue specimens into paraffin wax blocks and mount specimens on glass slides.
- Stain tissue specimens with dyes or other chemicals to make cellular detail visible for diagnostic evaluation.
- Operate and maintain histology laboratory equipment, including microtomes, tissue processors, embedding centers, and automated stainers.
- Identify and troubleshoot bench-level technical issues that may impact specimen quality or turnaround time.
Quality, Documentation, and Safety:
- Accurately document specimen handling and testing information in laboratory systems and logs.
- Follow established laboratory policies, procedures, and safety protocols when handling biological specimens and chemicals.
- Participate in quality control activities to ensure consistency and compliance with laboratory standards.
Collaboration:
- Communicate clearly with laboratory leadership and pathology personnel regarding specimen quality issues, rework needs, or workflow constraints.
What Success Looks Like (First 90 Days):
- Consistent production of high-quality histology slides meeting laboratory standards.
- Independent proficiency across core histology techniques, including embedding, microtomy, and staining.
- Reliable adherence to documentation, quality, and safety requirements.
- Stable, well-organized daily workflow with clear expectations and support from leadership.
Required Qualifications:
Education
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in one of the following or a closely related field:
- Histotechnology / Histologic Technology
- Clinical Laboratory Science
- Medical Laboratory Technology
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Biochemistry
- Biomedical Science
- Health Sciences or a related life science discipline
Certification (Strongly Preferred)
- HT (ASCP) — Histotechnician
or - HTL (ASCP) — Histotechnologist / Scientist in Histotechnology
Candidates without certification may be considered; however, all candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years of hands-on histology laboratory experience, with demonstrated proficiency across the full histology workflow.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on histology experience in a clinical or diagnostic laboratory setting.
- Demonstrated proficiency with microtomy, embedding, slide mounting, and staining workflows.
- Experience operating and maintaining standard histology laboratory instrumentation.
Role Competencies
- Strong attention to detail and fine motor skills are required for precision histology work.
- Strong understanding of laboratory quality standards, documentation practices, and safety protocols.
- Ability to work independently and reliably in an on-site laboratory environment.

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods while performing histology bench work.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for fine motor tasks such as microtomy and embedding.
- Ability to lift, move, and position materials and supplies up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to visually inspect specimens and slides, including color differentiation and fine detail recognition.
- Ability to work in a clinical laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals and biological specimens while following safety protocols.
