What are the responsibilities and job description for the Supervisor - Scientific Site Operations position at Avantor?
In this role, you will report to the Onsite Manager and will work closely with the
Avantor's Advanced Laboratory Services professionals of over 1,500 on- and off-site expert personnel - and our customers - to perform customized, mission-based lab work and research protocols that help return time back to science.
Location:Cambridge, MA
Shift:Mon - Fri, 7:30 am - 4 pm
Salary Range: $73K - $83K plus 5% ICP Bonus

What we're looking for:
Experience & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent experience
Minimum 3 years of experience in scientific or lab operations
At least 2 years of direct supervisory experience managing multi-associate teams
Proven ability to lead and manage scientific operations within a laboratory setting
Demonstrated experience in structured performance management, coaching, and accountability
Experience conducting interviews, onboarding, and structured training programs
Strong understanding of KPI tracking, reporting, and performance metrics
Proficient in troubleshooting and confident in making sound business decisions independently
Hands-on experience with chemical inventory systems and lab operations
Familiarity with SAP, Citrix, ChemSW, and customer-specific platforms
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); basic understanding of Access
Excellent customer service and vendor management skills with a professional, can-do demeanor
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Preferred certifications/training: GMP, GLP, CPR, spill containment, IATA, DOT, IMDG, HAZWOPER, OSHA

The Scientific Operations Supervisor is a key on-site leader responsible for managing daily scientific service operations while supervising a team of technical staff. This role combines hands-on lab support with operational oversight, including inventory control, chemical handling, purchasing, and customer service. In addition to lab-related responsibilities, the supervisor will also manage building-related needs such as coordinating repairs and overseeing pest control services. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership experience, a solid scientific background, and a proactive approach to team and facility management.
In this role you will:
Team Leadership & Performance Management
Supervise a team of 7 associates, providing coaching, accountability, and development
Conduct structured performance reviews and manage team KPIs
Lead hiring, onboarding, and training processes with consistency and rigor
Address performance issues and foster a culture of continuous improvement
Inventory & Chemical Management
Oversee consumables and chemical inventory, ensuring accurate documentation and reporting
Monitor stock usage, identify slow-moving items, and conduct cycle counts and physical inventories
Maintain chemical stockroom and flammable storage areas, ensuring proper organization and removal of expired materials
Log incoming chemicals and ensure accurate classification in the system
Operational Oversight
Manage package deliveries, glass wash services, and product put-away
Coordinate shipping activities and hazardous material documentation
Support chemical waste disposal and logistics with designated vendors
Purchasing & Vendor Coordination
Perform purchasing functions, including backorder resolution, quote processing, and invoice troubleshooting
Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to ensure timely and accurate procurement
Customer Service & Collaboration
Deliver high-level customer service while maintaining performance metrics
Interface with customer stakeholders and internal Avantor teams to ensure seamless service delivery
Systems & Compliance
Utilize platforms such as SAP, Citrix, ChemSW, and customer-specific systems
Maintain and update SOPs, and support change management initiatives
Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards
Facility & Building Management
Coordinate building maintenance and repairs with appropriate vendors or facilities teams
Oversee pest control services and ensure a clean, safe working environment
Serve as the point of contact for facility-related issues impacting scientific operations
