Proficiency in American Sign Language and Tactile Sign Language is required for this position.
Responsibilities
- Provide interpretation services appropriate for the language and the cultural background of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, or hearing residents and staff through the use of American Sign Language (ASL), English, and/or tactile ASL.
- Works effectively in teams with other sign language interpreters.
- Adheres to the standards of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
- Attends and participates in required facility in-service and trainings.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information. Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
- Reports all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property.
- Reports all incidents/accidents immediately. Reports occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious waste or hazardous chemicals to supervisor.
- Follows safety regulations in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Reports all unsafe or hazardous conditions or equipment immediately.
- Reports missing/illegible labels and MSDS’s to supervisor.
- Participates in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills; demonstrates knowledge of fire and emergency policies and procedures.
- Must possess, as a minimum, a high-school diploma or its equivalent.
- Proficiency in the use of American Sign Language.
- Three years’ experience in ASL/English interpretation is preferred.
- Completion of an accredited interpreter training program is preferred.
- Previous experience working in senior living is preferred.
- Proficiency in the communication modes and techniques used by the DeafBlind population, including tactile American Sign Language (ASL).
- Maintain current CPR, First-Aid, and Food Handler cards.
- Must meet the standards for Sign Language Interpreters according to the Oregon Health Authority: Health Licensing Office.
- Proof of current and valid malpractice insurance.
- Must be a member of the Registry of the Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
- If required by the state regulation, must possess and maintain state certification.
- Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
- Must be able to function independently, have flexibility, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
- Support in other areas as assigned by Staff Interpreter Coordinator and/or Executive Director.
