What are the responsibilities and job description for the Die Setter position at AVA - Milan Metal Systems LLC?
At AVA Milan Metal Systems (MMS), our we manufacture stampings and welding components to customer specifications in accordance with safety, quality, and productivity standards. We assembly many of these and other components for many of our customers.
The Die Setter is responsible for setting up and installing dies into machines, adjusting machine settings to ensure all specifications are met, and operating equipment to test dies. This role includes inspecting finished products to maintain high levels of productivity while consistently meeting customer quality standards.
The position is based in Milan, MI.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Set up, install, and operate stamping presses; safely load, align, and secure dies according to process specifications
- Read, follow, and execute documented Standard Work Instructions and setup sheets
- Adjust machine settings and parameters to ensure all parts meet quality and dimensional requirements
- Load steel coils and properly feed starting strips through progressive dies
- Operate material handling equipment safely, including forklifts (Hi‑Lo) and overhead cranes
- Verify workpiece alignment and part quality using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and tape measures
- Accurately complete all required production, quality, and setup documentation
- Troubleshoot press, tooling, and die issues to minimize downtime and maintain production efficiency
- Perform routine housekeeping and maintain a clean, organized work area in accordance with 6S standards
- Comply with all federal, state, and company safety regulations, policies, and procedures
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Previous experience in pressroom operations, including die setting and operation of single‑hit, progressive, and transfer dies
- Proficient in Smart‑Pac control and feeder programming
- Working knowledge of PLCs and basic programming logic
- Experience using Plex ERP software preferred
- Ability to read and interpret Production Inspection Reports and perform part inspections
- Experience with tonnage monitoring systems, lead hits, and interpreting ram settings
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with cross‑functional teams
- Self‑motivated with the ability to respond positively to direction from Supervisors or Team Leaders
- Strong problem‑solving skills with high attention to detail
- Reliable and dependable with a commitment to working scheduled shifts
- Ability and willingness to work overtime when needed, including daily and weekend hours, to meet customer demands
ADDITIONAL REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- Forklift (Hi‑Lo) and overhead crane operation experience
- Trained and experienced in Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
- Experience with transfer dies, including finger adjustments and transfer programming (Atlas and Wayne Trail systems)
- SMED‑trained (Single‑Minute Exchange of Die) with a focus on reducing setup and changeover time
STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED
