POSITION SUMMARY
This is a temporary, full-time, grant-funded position (40 hours a week), 12 months.
The BIA Project Collections Assistant reports to the Associate Curator of Archaeology and is primarily responsible for the processing of and accountability of the Bureau of Indian Affairs archaeological collection which is part of the larger Southwest Museum Archaeology Collections. This job includes research, data entry, database management, inventory, and cataloguing. This is a full-time, non-exempt position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Reports to the Associate Curator of Anthropology and Repatriation Supervisor. Will work directly on a day-to-day basis with the Archaeological Collections Associate/Repatriation Specialist. Tasks will include, but are not limited to:
- Reconciling archaeology records in collections database
- Research
- Database management
- Researching and writing institutional history
- Works with Autry Archivist to create finding aid, box lists, and indices for archaeological materials
- Rehouse collection items following current standards when needed
- Assist Archaeological team with associating archival materials with archaeological objects
OTHER FUNCTIONS
General Collections Management Department Work: All members of the Curatorial and Collections Management Department are responsible for the overall security and well‑being of the Museum collections, including monitoring and practicing proper handling and transport of collections, being present and alert in collections areas when non‑collections people (staff, vendors, and visitors) are present, knowing and following Museum policies and procedures regarding security of the premises and collections, and being available for after-hours emergencies.
Other Duties as Required: The professional staff members of the Autry Museum of the American West act as a team to promote and perform to the best interests of the institution. As a member of this team the Project Collections Assistant may be called upon to represent the department and/or the institution at special events, to participate in institution‑wide projects, and to participate in special department projects. The Autry reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Academic: Current graduate Master’s degree student in related fields, i.e. Anthropology, Archaeology, Museum Studies, History, Anthropology, Conservation, Library Science or Art/Art History.
Professionalism:
- One to three years related experience in registration methods in a museum, or an equivalent combination of academic and work experience.
- Knowledge of Archaeological Laboratory Skills is needed
- Must possess excellent organizational skills and be able to both works well independently and perform well as a team member
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to recognize discrepancies.
- Willingness to perform repetitive tasks
- Strong creative problem-solving skills
- Current knowledge of Collections Management theory and practice obtained through membership in professional organizations, practical training, reading professional literature, and attendance of meetings, seminars and workshops.
- Previous work with a museum archaeology collection a plus
- Experience working with a variety of objects such as stone objects and ceramics plus familiarity the Native North American Cultures Specifically Great Basin, Southwest, and California a plus.
Computer Skills: Must be proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience using museum collection databases, MIMSY preferred
