JOB SUMMARY
The Heavy Equipment Operator in Test III supports the development, validation, and fielding of ASI's semi-autonomous and autonomous robotic systems through advanced equipment operation, structured testing activities, and operational feedback. This role blends real-world heavy equipment expertise with system testing and troubleshooting to ensure robotic platforms perform safely and reliably in real-world environments.
As a Level III operator, this position executes complex test scenarios, supports system diagnostics and calibration, mentors junior operators, and participates in customer-facing activities such as demonstrations and training. The role works closely with engineering and test teams to evaluate system performance and improve operational readiness across multiple equipment platforms and industries.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate heavy equipment manually, via tele-operation, semi-autonomously, and autonomously to evaluate system performance and usability
- Execute structured test procedures designed to validate robotic system functionality, durability, and safety
- Collaborate with engineering and program teams to understand system concepts of operation, customer workflows, and testing objectives
- Perform equipment inspections and document test procedures, observations, and results with accuracy and clarity
- Support system diagnostics, troubleshooting, and calibration activities alongside engineering teams
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor mechanical repairs to maintain equipment readiness
- Assist with integration and setup of robotic hardware and software systems on heavy equipment platforms
- Mentor junior operators and support safe testing practices within the team
- Participate in customer demonstrations, field deployments, and acceptance testing activities
- Provide operational feedback to engineering teams to improve system design, usability, and reliability
- Contribute to improvements in testing processes, operational procedures, and safety practices
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, JOB SKILLS
- 5–10 years of experience operating heavy equipment such as construction, mining, agricultural, or industrial machinery
- Experience supporting equipment testing, validation, or field deployment activities preferred
- Strong understanding of equipment operation, safety procedures, and operational best practices
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot mechanical and operational issues in field environments
- Strong documentation and reporting habits related to testing and operational activities
- Ability to mentor less experienced operators and support safe test execution
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate heavy equipment safely
- Strong communication and collaboration skills when working with engineering and test teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with autonomous or semi-autonomous equipment systems
- Experience participating in field testing or engineering validation programs
- Experience providing equipment training or instruction to operators or customers
- OSHA certification or willingness to obtain certification
