Automated Wellhead Compression, LLC (AWC) Farmington, NM · Remote · Full-Time
About the Role
AWC designs and manufactures wellhead compression equipment for the oil & gas industry. We're looking for a Drafter & Design Engineer to support — and at times lead — product design and quotation efforts, from initial customer requirements through 3D modeling, P&ID drafting, and final construction documents. This role suits someone with sharp attention to detail, strong documentation habits, and excellent communication skills who thrives in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.
What You'll Do
New Project Intake (Level I Engineering)
- Define product requirements through direct communication with customers; keep detailed meeting minutes covering performance requirements and specifications
- Work with the Project Engineer, AWC management, and vendors to size and select valves, pumps, vessels, motors, compressors, blowers, controls, and instrumentation
- Coordinate with vendors to confirm pricing, lead times, and product specifications
- Edit and draft P&IDs per direction from the Project Engineer, ASME engineer, and customer; maintain the P&ID database and naming conventions
- Build BOMs with line-item detail matched to P&ID TAG IDs
- Maintain organized project folders (RFQs, performance reports, data sheets, P&IDs, BOMs, 3D models, STEP files, blueprints, and related documents)
- Study relevant API specifications and customer-provided requirements; escalate any requested deviations to the President
- Coordinate with electrical consultants and shop managers to finalize cost and lead-time estimates
PO Award / Design Execution (Level II Engineering)
- Build 3D models of approved equipment from the P&ID and BOM, incorporating accurate STEP files for components and structural material
- Lead or participate in customer 3D model reviews and document meeting minutes
- Manage redlines and revisions to P&IDs and 3D models within required timelines
- Participate in internal pre-construction meetings covering scope, performance, specifications, and models
- Send management weekly progress updates on active drafting projects
- Coordinate with fabrication, ASME vessel, and assembly teams, and with third-party PEs on structural analysis as needed
Pre-Construction & Final Approval
- Participate in pre-construction and final approval review meetings
- Ensure controlled documents are properly recorded and stored per AWC policy
- Create, manage, and distribute shop blueprints to shop managers
What We're Looking For
- Experience in mechanical drafting/design, ideally in oil & gas, pressure vessels, or industrial equipment
- Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling and P&ID drafting
- Working knowledge of (or willingness to quickly learn) relevant API specifications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills — this role involves frequent contact with customers, vendors, and internal teams
- High attention to detail and disciplined record-keeping
- Ability to multitask and reprioritize quickly in a fast-moving shop/design schedule
- Comfortable working independently and driving projects to resolution
- Available Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM MST, with occasional additional hours or weekend work to meet deadlines
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary depending upon experience and working knowledge of relevant equipment and details
- 50% of health insurance premium paid by AWC after a 90-day probationary period
- Company-provided 3D drafting computer with relevant software and a company cell phone
