Construction Site Safety Specialist – Pharmaceutical/API Expansion
Location: North Chicago, IL – Onsite
Contract: 12 months with potential for extension
Automated Systems, Inc. (ASI) is seeking an experienced Site Safety Specialist to support a major API expansion project at an active pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in North Chicago, IL.
This is a hands-on field safety role focused on contractor safety, construction activities, and high-risk work within a highly regulated GMP manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate will have experience supporting pharmaceutical, API, biotech, chemical, or other industrial manufacturing capital projects, facility expansions, or construction activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide daily safety oversight for contractors, subcontractors, trades, and vendors.
- Review and manage Safe Work Permits, Hot Work, Confined Space, LOTO, and other high-risk activities.
- Review JHAs/JSAs and verify appropriate controls are implemented in the field.
- Conduct safety walks, inspections, toolbox talks, and pre-task planning.
- Monitor construction activities involving rigging, cranes, heavy equipment, electrical work, fall protection, scaffolding, and hazardous materials.
- Identify unsafe conditions and stop work when necessary.
- Partner with EHS, Engineering, Construction Management, Operations, and contractor leadership.
- Document safety observations, incidents, near misses, corrective actions, and project safety metrics.
- Support OSHA compliance and incident investigations.
Required Qualifications:
- 5 years of construction, industrial, contractor safety, or EHS experience.
- Experience working in an active manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926/1910 and construction safety practices.
- OSHA 30, CSP, or equivalent safety credential.
- HAZWOPER certification.
- Strong knowledge of hot work, confined space, LOTO, fall protection, electrical safety, rigging, and heavy equipment.
- Ability to work onsite with a 6:00 AM start, occasional overtime, and weekends as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience supporting pharmaceutical/API manufacturing, GMP facilities, biotech, chemical manufacturing, brownfield projects, capital expansions, process equipment installation, hazardous/flammable materials, or classified/XP environments.
· Relevant experience with pharmaceutical, API, chemical, or GMP capital project experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
