What are the responsibilities and job description for the Junior Electrical Controls Designer position at Automated Machine Systems?
Automated Machine Systems is looking for a Junior Electrical Controls Designer to support the electrical design and documentation of custom automation equipment.
This is a great opportunity for someone early in their career who wants to grow in industrial automation, electrical controls, machine design, PLC programming, and troubleshooting. The role is especially well-suited for someone who has recently completed or is close to completing a program such as GRCC’s Electrical Controls Engineering Technology program.
This position will start primarily with creating, copying, editing, and updating electrical schematics in AutoCAD. Much of the work will begin from existing AMS drawings, examples, and proven machine designs. You will not be expected to design complex systems from a blank page on day one. When something falls outside of the ordinary, guidance will be provided by experienced team members.
Over time, this role can grow into more independent electrical design work, PLC programming, machine debug, startup support, and troubleshooting.
What You’ll Do
Create and update electrical schematics using AutoCAD
Use existing AMS drawings and templates as starting points for new equipment prints
Copy, paste, edit, and revise electrical prints for custom automation equipment
Update device tags, wire numbers, I/O references, panel components, and field wiring pages
Assist with electrical Bills of Material
Review drawings for accuracy, consistency, and completeness
Make drawing updates based on engineering, assembly, debug, and customer feedback
Work with controls engineers, mechanical designers, assemblers, and project leads
Learn AMS electrical design standards and customer-specific requirements
Support documentation updates during machine build, debug, and startup
Grow toward PLC programming, debugging, troubleshooting, and more independent design work
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented, willing to learn, and interested in building a career in industrial automation and controls.
A strong candidate may have:
Recent education or training in electrical controls, automation, mechatronics, or a related technical field
Familiarity with electrical schematics, control panels, PLCs, sensors, motors, VFDs, or industrial wiring
Basic AutoCAD experience, or the ability to learn AutoCAD quickly
Strong attention to detail
Ability to follow examples, standards, and existing designs
Willingness to ask questions before guessing
Interest in PLC programming, machine debug, and troubleshooting
Good communication skills
A team-first attitude
Helpful, But Not Required
Experience with AutoCAD Electrical
Experience reading electrical prints
Exposure to PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, safety circuits, or industrial networks
Hands-on wiring, panel building, maintenance, robotics, or machine troubleshooting experience
Internship, lab, school project, or work experience related to industrial controls
Growth Opportunity
This position is intended to grow with the right person. The initial focus will be electrical schematic creation and documentation support, but as your skills develop, you may take on more responsibility in:
Independent electrical design
PLC and HMI programming
Machine debug
Startup support
Troubleshooting
Customer acceptance testing
Continuous improvement of AMS electrical standards
This is a strong first step for someone who wants to become a Controls Engineer, Electrical Designer, Automation Technician, or PLC Programmer.
Why Join AMS?
At AMS, you will work on real custom automation equipment used in industrial production environments. You will learn how machines are designed, documented, built, wired, debugged, and improved. You will be surrounded by experienced people who can help you build practical, hands-on controls knowledge while contributing to real projects.
Apply
Interested candidates should submit a resume and be prepared to discuss any relevant coursework, projects, AutoCAD experience, electrical controls training, or hands-on technical experience.
