Position Summary: The Support Teacher plays an essential role in fostering a supportive, inclusive, and well-structured learning environment for students with autism and related developmental needs. Working under the guidance and leadership of the Lead Teacher, the Support Teacher assists in delivering instruction, classroom management, student supervision, and the implementation of individualized support strategies. This role requires flexibility, collaboration, and a strong commitment to student growth and well-being across academic, behavioral, and social domains.
Essential Responsibilities:
Instructional Support & Student Engagement
- Provide instructional assistance by working with individuals or small groups of students as directed by the Lead Teacher.
- Assist in implementing lesson plans and classroom activities, utilizing accommodations and modifications outlined in student education plans.
- Facilitate student engagement through hands-on, visual, and sensory-friendly activities tailored to learners with autism.
- Support the delivery of specialized curriculum aligned with each student's unique needs, reinforcing academic and functional skills.
- Participate in classroom meetings to review student progress, instructional strategies, and behavior plans.
Behavioral Support & Student Safety
- Implement positive behavior support strategies under the direction of the Lead Teacher and behavior team.
- Monitor and manage student behavior in alignment with individual behavior intervention plans (BIPs), classroom expectations, and school-wide policies.
- Promptly report behavioral concerns, incidents, or safety issues to the Lead Teacher and/or administration.
- Assist with crisis prevention and response procedures, maintaining student safety at all times.
Classroom Operations & School Community Support
- Supervise students during non-academic activities, including recess, lunch, arrival/dismissal (carline), field trips, and physical education.
- Maintain a clean, organized, safe classroom and school environment, including common areas and playground spaces.
- Prepare classroom materials, make copies, and assist with grading as directed.
- Serve as a reliable team member by attending required staff meetings, professional development sessions, and training programs.
- Provide coverage in the Lead Teacher’s absence, ensuring continuity of classroom operations.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support staff to promote student success.
- Maintain open, respectful, and proactive communication with the Lead Teacher regarding classroom needs and student concerns.
- Demonstrate professionalism in interactions with students, families, and colleagues.
- Engage in ongoing coaching and feedback to enhance instructional skills and support strategies.
Extended Day Program Support (As Needed)
- Assist with supervision and delivery of engaging activities in the Extended Day program, including sensory projects, physical fitness, arts & crafts, and social opportunities aligned to students' developmental levels.
Job Type: Full-time
