About the team
The MPC is an independent team of experienced and expert public servants who review workplace decisions and actions, conduct audits of recruitment exercises, undertake investigations into workplace misconduct and provide cost recovery services to assist agencies to run merit-based recruitment exercises.
Through this work, we contribute to making the APS a better, fairer and safer workplace and model employer. We use review outcomes as an opportunity to make recommendations to agencies to improve processes and build capability.
We publish online resources based on data and insights gathered through our work and lead a community of practice to share insights and examples of innovation.
About the role
The Assistant Director - Reviews works as a member of a small team to primarily conduct independent reviews of employment-related decisions, including Code of Conduct decisions, on behalf of the MPC. Other duties may occasionally include decision-making as an authorised Freedom of Information (FOI) officer, and assisting with the provision of cost-recovery service activities. The role also undertakes business improvement and strategic project work as required.
The Assistant Director β Reviews:
- assesses review of action applications
- conducts timely reviews of action which may involve analysing reports and correspondence, interviewing applicants and other parties online by videoconference, interpreting relevant legislation and policy, and preparing a written correspondence or report with recommendations
- implements alternative dispute resolution solutions in cases where appropriate
- makes decisions on review of action cases when allocated as a delegate of the MPC
- works jointly with more senior officers on complex or sensitive cases
- manages relationships with agencies, review applicants and their representatives
- provides expert advice to stakeholders on MPC functions
- answers telephone and email enquiries from employees and agencies about the Review of Actions scheme
- contributes to, and supports the Office to maintain best practice management standards for the handling of reviews and in best practice public administration
- leads or contributes to strategic, change and continuous improvement projects in the operational work of the Office.

Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS) or, in limited circumstances, in the process of obtaining citizenship.
Successful applicants will be required to undergo the process to obtain and maintain, or continue to hold the required security clearance level for the role as indicated. All Commission staff are required to have a minimum Baseline security clearance prior to commencement.
Successful applicants will be required to undergo a mandatory National Criminal History check as part of the pre-employment eligibility checks.
