Position Overview
The Assistant Basketball Coach, Boys will play a key role in supporting the Head Coach and the overall basketball program. This position is responsible for training, mentoring, and inspiring student-athletes through intentional development on and off the court. The ideal candidate is a high-character leader who values education, discipline, and teamwork, and who demonstrates a passion for helping young athletes grow as players and as people.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Head Coach in building a program grounded in integrity, accountability, and excellence.
- Player Development & Coaching: Mentor and train student-athletes to maximize their performance on and off the court.
- Recruiting Top Talent: Identify and attract skilled players to strengthen the team’s competitive edge.
- Strategic Planning & Game Preparation: Assist in creating game strategies and organizing practices to enhance team performance.
- Administrative Support: Oversee team logistics, compliance, and operational duties.
- Fundraising & Community Engagement: Promote the program through events, outreach, and fundraising initiatives.
- Leadership & Mentorship: Support student-athletes academically, athletically, and personally, creating a culture of excellence.
- Assist with planning and executing practices, player development sessions, and game strategies.
- Mentor players on life skills, leadership, and personal growth, modeling professionalism and character.
- Contribute to scouting, film review, and statistical analysis to enhance team performance.
- Oversee safety and well-being of student-athletes during all practices, games, and travel.
- Represent Austin Prep Academy’s mission, values, and standards in all internal and external interactions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Director of Operations.
Scouting
- Assist Head Coach with opponent scouting.
- Watch video footage of opponents and provide detailed written reports.
- Establish a video exchange program and provide video of scheduled opponents.
- Scout team and create opponent offense simulations.
Assist the Head Coach with teaching and coaching.
- Organize, plan, and implement daily practices.
- Direct on-court coaching responsibilities.
- Develop and improve player skills.
- Teach individual skill sessions.
- Evaluate game footage and present analysis to the team and coaching staff.
- Prepare scouting reports for assigned opponents.
Qualifications
Required:
- Proven experience coaching or playing basketball at the high school, collegiate, or professional level.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to mentor and motivate student-athletes in a disciplined, team-oriented environment.
- Proficiency with technology, including video analysis and basic Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Physical Education, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience in player recruitment, college placement, and program administration.
- Bilingual communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for tournaments and games.
- Commitment to working collaboratively with staff, parents, and partners.
