Underground Utility Worker
Construct, install, locate, repair, and maintain underground utilities including water, sewer, storm drainage, and related infrastructure. Must have knowledge of underground construction practices, utility installation techniques, trench safety, and the ability to read and interpret utility plans and simple layouts. Must understand construction tools, equipment, and procedures. Other duties may be assigned.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Study blueprints, utility maps, sketches, and project plans to determine layout, elevations, and materials required.
- Excavate trenches using hand tools or equipment while maintaining proper depth, grade, and slope.
- Install, connect, and repair underground utilities such as water lines, sewer lines, storm drains, and conduit systems.
- Follow established safety rules and regulations, including trench safety, confined space procedures, and traffic control requirements.
- Cut, join, and fit pipes using appropriate tools and materials (PVC, ductile iron, HDPE, concrete pipe, etc.).
- Operate compactors, trenchers, saws, and other construction equipment as required.
- Backfill and compact trenches to proper density and specifications.
- Locate existing utilities and verify alignment, depth, and clearance before excavation.
- Perform leak testing, mandrel testing, and other quality checks as required.
- Maintain accurate records, document work performed, and provide written progress reports.
- Maintain clean job site, pick up tools/equipment, and secure job site daily to eliminate hazards.
- Operate light equipment such as skid steers, mini‑excavators, or forklifts (if qualified).
- Maintain housekeeping and ensure safe working conditions.
- Other duties as assigned.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and may frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Qualifications Required for this Position
Education: No minimum education requirements.
Experience: 3–5 years of underground utility installation or related construction experience.
Certification/License:
- OSHA trench safety or confined space training preferred.
