We are seeking a skilled Line Boring Machinist to set up and operate portable line boring equipment and conventional machining tools to repair, restore, or fabricate bores on metallic components. This role involves precision measurement, alignment, and machining to restore equipment to manufacturer specifications. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-focused, and comfortable working both in-shop and in field environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and technical documents to determine machining requirements
- Set up, align, and operate portable line boring equipment on heavy equipment and structural components (shop and field work)
- Measure and mark bore centers, alignment points, and tooling requirements
- Select and secure appropriate tooling, fixtures, and accessories for machining operations
- Calculate and adjust machining parameters such as speeds, feeds, and depth of cut
- Safely position equipment and components using cranes, rigging, jacks, and clamps
- Perform test runs to verify setup accuracy prior to final machining
- Monitor machining operations and adjust for tool wear and dimensional accuracy
- Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, calipers) to verify tolerances and finishes
- Document completed work, measurements, and any corrective actions
- Collaborate with supervisors, engineering, and production teams to resolve issues
- Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and company policies
- Maintain tools and equipment in accordance with company standards
QualificationsRequired
- Minimum 2 years of machining experience (boring operations, conventional machining, or heavy equipment repair)
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
- Strong understanding of machining principles, tooling, speeds, and feeds
- Experience with precision measuring tools
- Ability to safely operate cranes, rigging, and lifting equipment
- Basic computer and documentation skills
- Formal machinist training or apprenticeship
- Experience with portable line boring systems (e.g., Climax, York, Boretech, Mirage)
- CNC machining experience (setup and/or operation)
- Welding and fabrication experience (including bore buildup or ID welding)
- Forklift certification and/or rigging training
- Experience working on heavy equipment or industrial machinery
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 lbs occasionally (with assistance)
- Capable of standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in confined or elevated spaces
- Strong manual dexterity and visual acuity for precision work
- Ability to wear required PPE (safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves, hearing protection)
Work Environment
- Work performed in both shop and field settings
- Exposure to noise, vibration, machinery, metal shavings, and industrial materials
- Work may occur in varying weather and environmental conditions
- Occasional overtime, weekend work, and travel may be required
