Position Summary

The Environmental Services (EVS) Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within assigned areas of the facility. The EVS Technician supports infection prevention efforts through proper cleaning, disinfection, waste handling, linen management, and participation in cleanliness improvement initiatives in accordance with organizational standards, regulatory requirements, and industry guidelines.

Department Summary

The Room Cleaning Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment throughout patient care areas by performing cleaning and disinfection of both occupied and discharge rooms in accordance with established procedures and infection prevention standards. The technician demonstrates proficiency in cleaning specialized and high-risk areas such as surgical services, labor and delivery, critical care units, cath lab, emergency department, and neonatal intensive care units, with a strong understanding of appropriate disinfectant selection and required dwell times. Responsibilities also include operating UV disinfection equipment as assigned, completing operating room terminal cleaning when needed, stocking and ordering EVS supplies, and utilizing computers or mobile devices for daily tasks and documentation. The position may assist in training new colleagues in specialized areas and requires compliance with respiratory protection standards, including N95 mask fit testing, to support a safe and effective healthcare environment.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • 2-3 years of institutional cleaning experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with infection control procedures preferred.
  • Previously knowledge of cleaning chemical use and safe handling preferred.

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Perform routine cleaning and disinfection of assigned areas, including clinical, non-clinical, and public spaces.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces using approved products and procedures.
  • Follow established infection prevention protocols, including isolation, precautionary cleaning, and PPE use as applicable to assigned areas.
  • Collect, handle, transport, and dispose of waste, including general waste, regulated medical waste, and recyclable materials, in accordance with facility policies.
  • Handle, transport, and stage soiled and clean linen in accordance with infection control and linen management procedures.
  • Ensure proper segregation of waste streams to prevent contamination.
  • Replenish supplies such as paper products, soap, and hand hygiene materials.
  • Perform floor care duties including mopping, vacuuming, and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Assist with periodic and deep cleaning activities, including project-based work as assigned.
  • Participate in departmental improvement initiatives related to patient experience, including HCAHPS and overall hospital cleanliness.
  • Respond to service requests, spills, and urgent cleaning needs in a timely manner.
  • Safely operate cleaning equipment and perform routine care and maintenance to ensure proper function; report malfunctions or safety concerns promptly.
  • Use chemicals and cleaning products according to manufacturer instructions and facility safety guidelines.
  • Complete required departmental and facility education and training within established timeframes.
  • Perform assigned work or duties within expected timelines.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Adhere to OSHAA, CDC, and organizational safety policies.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, professional behavior expectations and appearance standards.
  • Report hazards, safety concerns, and incidents promptly.
  • Maintain accurate daily log and assignment sheets.

Department Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Cleans patient rooms, discharge and occupied, according to procedure.
  • Uses UV-Disinfecting Robot as assigned or requested.
  • Completes stripping of patient rooms and ensure items and equipment are stored in proper locations.
  • Responsible for cleaning and disinfection of specialty units. Areas include but not limited to surgical services, labor and delivery, critical care units, Cath Lab, Emergency Department, and neonatal intensive care unit.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the cleaning and disinfecting requirements specific to highly sensitive environments.
  • Ability to identify and utilize appropriate disinfectants and dwell times.
  • Makes unoccupied beds according to procedure.
  • Effective use of computers and/or mobile devices for daily job performance activities.
  • May be requested to assist in the process of training new colleagues.
  • May complete OR room terminal cleaning as assigned.
  • Orders and stocks EVS supplies for assigned areas.
  • N95 Mask Fit Testing required.

Working Conditions

  • Colleagues may be assigned to different locations within the foundation.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions and changes in priority of duties throughout the day.
  • Ability to work shifts of at least 8 hours, and occasionally longer.
  • Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate floor coverage.
  • Work weekends and holidays as assigned. Every other weekend and three holidays a year, in a group rotation.

Hazardous Exposure Category

Category I - Includes tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for spills or splashes of, or mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues are Category I tasks. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.
