MEDICARE/MEDICAID BILLER

BASIC FUNCTION:

Billing of Medicaid/Medicare in an accurate and timely manner.

JOB DUTIES:

Responsible for the billing and follow-up of all inpatient and outpatient accounts other duties that relate to patient billings. Tasks are routine in nature, but due to the complexity and variety of third party payors, job requires a great deal of experience and understanding of standing instructions. Work is periodically spot checked by the Patient Accounts Coordinator. Speed and accuracy, because of the primary involvement of money, is of great importance.

1. Answering questions and assisting people in understanding their bills. Answering correspondence, phone calls or in-person contact timely and politely so as to satisfy' any confusion or complaints.
2. Maintenance of inpatient and outpatient account files. Keeping proper documentation with accounts of phone conversations, correspondence, billing rejections, etc., so that each account contains a logical explanation of whatever has taken place. Colleague's actions are based mainly on experience and standing instructions.
3. Daily verification and preauthorization of third party coverage for inpatient admissions, observations, and outpatient services as needed.
4. May perform cashier and inpatient/outpatient collecting duties as needed.
5. All other duties assigned by the Department Director.

Colleague has been instructed in providing customer service and on interacting with age groups as related to the department's general client population: including use of appropriate interventions, communication and skills to match the age and/or abilities of the patient/family.

Adding machine, PC, CRT terminal, printers, copy machine

EDUCATION TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate or equivalent. One year third party payor billing is preferred.

Medicaid/Medicare billing preferred.

Familiarity with medical terminology required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• • Able to stand/walk to various hospital departments intermittently through a 7.5 hr. shift.
  • Able to sit at a desk for up to 4 hours at a time.
  • Able to bend to reach items on the floor, desk level and overhead.
  • Able to lift books and supplies weighing 25 lbs. intermittently.
  • Able to see clearly and hear normal speaking tones.
  • Able to communicate verbally interpersonally and over the telephone in a clear and concise speech.  Dexterity necessary to write legibly and type for long periods; up to four hours at a time  Visual acuity to proofread.
