The Diesel Mechanic (Lead Tech) is responsible for performing advanced diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on sanitation fleet vehicles, including garbage trucks, roll-offs, front loaders, rear loaders, transfer trailers, and other heavy equipment. This role requires strong technical expertise along with team-building and lower-level supervisory capabilities to help guide and support maintenance operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this role successfully, the individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Additional tasks may be assigned.
- Diagnose and repair diesel and hydraulic systems on sanitation trucks.
- Perform preventive maintenance including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, and brake adjustments.
- Inspect and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic components, including cylinders, arms, hoists, pumps, and lines.
- Service transmissions, engines, drivetrains, fuel systems, exhaust, and emissions systems.
- Perform welding or fabrication repairs as needed.
- Complete work orders accurately and document all repairs performed.
- Maintain safe, clean, and organized workspaces at all times.
- Follow all OSHA, DOT, company, and safety policies.
- Communicate vehicle conditions and repair recommendations to leadership.
- Perform road-call repairs when required.
- Operate diagnostic software and electronic tools.
- Assist with team coordination, task prioritization, and mentoring less experienced technicians.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have direct supervisory authority but requires strong team-building skills and the ability to provide guidance, support, and task prioritization for other technicians when needed.
Qualifications:QualificationsEducation & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical or vocational certification in diesel or heavy equipment repair preferred.
- 1–5 years of experience working with diesel trucks, heavy equipment, sanitation fleets, or equivalent.
- Experience with hydraulic systems strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated organizational skills, including prioritization and time management.
- Previous lead or informal supervisory experience is a plus.
Certifications / Licenses
- Valid driver’s license required.
- CDL (Class A or B) or ability to obtain preferred.
- Preferred certifications include:
- Brake certification
- HVAC certification (truck systems)
- Forklift certification
- ASE certifications (or equivalent) are a plus
Skills & Abilities
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities.
- Ability to read and interpret manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
- Solid understanding of hydraulic systems.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Basic computer skills (work orders, maintenance systems, email).
Tools Requirement

Work Environment / Physical Requirements
- Frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds.
- Regular kneeling, bending, standing, twisting, and climbing.
- Exposure to noise, odors, oils, grease, dirt, and outdoor conditions.
