The South Texas VA Health Care System, San Antonio, Texas is seeking a highly qualified full-time Physician (Pathologist) with the specialized experience in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. The Pathologst must also obtain subspecialty training in antomic pathology cases and in teaching.



Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience:
  • Hematopathology Board Certified
  • 3 or more years of experience (post -training in hematopathology (bone marrow, lymph node, flow cytometry)
  • 3 or more years of experience (post-training) in general anatomic pathology
  • 3 or more years of experiend (post-training) in cytology (including gynecologic specimens)

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds, Moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds, Use of fingers, Both hands required, Walking (4-8 hours), Standing (4-8 hours), Both legs required, Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, Both eyes required, Depth perception, Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors, Hearing (aid permitted); Mental/ Emotional Stability.

Responsibilities:

The Pathologist will provide direct clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory services and serve as a consutltant to other physicians to contribute to the operation of effective and safe laboratories that in compliance with the standards established to ensure accurate anatomic pathology services.

Duties include the following:
  • Pathologists working in the Department of Pathology at STVHCS must be Board Certified in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology. Additional training or experience in other subspecialty is highly encouraged.
  • The physician will maintain professionalism, work ethic and responsibility to VA mission and coordinate and collaborate with STVHCS Chief of Pathology to meet the VA mission, to include provision of patient care in the context of a Patient Centered Care.
  • Participate in Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, Autopsy services and Clinical Pathology. Not all pathologists are expected to function in all disciplines. The work assignment will depend upon training, expertise, competency, specialty training and/or certification.
  • Participate in Multidisciplinary on-site interdepartmental conferences such as tumor board etc. Offsite conferences need to be approved by the service chief first.
  • Participate in QA, Performance and dashboards for pathology and for STVHCS.
  • On-call 24/7 (Anatomic and/or Clinical) as delineated in monthly and 6 monthly rotation schedule.
  • Encourage to participate in training and supervision of trainees.
  • Any changes made to the schedule need to be coordinated among the pathologists. Swapping of service schedule and on-call is the responsibility of pathologist initiating the request. Under all circumstances service needs to be covered. The office of the service chief need to be aware of any change (approval is not required just notification to ensure coverage of the service)
  • Professional overseeing of lab operations
  • Participate in departmental meetings, QA process or task delegated by Chief of Service to achieve the mission of Pathology and Lab Med Services and VA.
  • Provides support and educational interactions to pathoogy staff (technicians, transcriptionists, technologists, supervisors, lab managers and administrative staff)
  • Inform the Chief of service for leave approval, tour of duty, time off from regular tour of duty or any related issues.
  • Meet turnaround time requirements for surgical, cytology, autopsy etc cases as defined by VHA pathology policy and performance measures.
  • Serves on medical center committees representing Pathology.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (08:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) with Rotating ON-Call
