Description

Camp Y-Owasco is looking for conscientious medical staff to provide appropriate medical care for campers during the 2026 summer camping season. If you like the camp atmosphere and like working with children, this job may be for you! Free room and board for employee and free camping for employee's child(ren).

General Functions

Under the direction of the Camp Director, provides a safe medical environment that meets the health care needs of program participants by directing the operation of the camp health center.

Responsibilities/Functions/Duties/Tasks

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for the safety and health of children & staff at all times and takes the lead in solving problems.
  • Provides appropriate camp healthcare to staff and campers
  • Responds to medical and traumatic emergencies and provides appropriate care, makes determination of outside medical care
  • Assist camp director with health center standards of the NY Department of Health, American Camp Association, and the YMCA of the USA Best Practices.
  • Assists in Camp Office Responsibilities
  • Assists in packing of all health center materials and equipment at the end of the season
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Attends required meetings, completes required training and responds to inquires in a timely manner.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Current NY Registered Nurse License or Eligible for NY RN Reciprocity. NY EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, or LPN may be considered.
  • Two years of pediatric nursing experience or related experience with children or work experience
  • Three years or more of nursing experience. Experience in emergency nursing preferred.
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations
  • The ability to effectively work in a developmentally appropriate way with children ages 7-16
  • Must clear a criminal background check sufficient to NYS Commissioner of Health.
  • Must clear DCJS background check
  • Must be certified in CPR and maintain the certification throughout employment.
  • Must have and maintain Wilderness First Aid training.
  • Must maintain a driver’s license free from substance related infractions.

Physical Demands

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with staff, campers and parents.
  • The employee must be able to traverse a campground with uneven terrain when needed.
  • The employee is occasionally required to remain stationary for extended periods to work on a computer. This may involve repetitive motion of hands and fingers.
  • The employee must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Specific visual acuity includes the ability to distinguish colors, work on a computer, read calibrations on safety equipment.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.

Work Environment

  • The work environment is both in and out of doors. When indoors the environment is temperature controlled with normal to moderate noise levels. When working outside the environment is subject to weather extremes, subject to moderate noise and subject to mosquitoes and other insects.
