Anesthesia Practice Manager – Job Description

Overview

The Anesthesia Practice Manager oversees daily operations, staffing, financial performance, compliance, and strategic planning for an anesthesia department or anesthesia practice group. This role ensures efficient workflow, safe patient care, regulatory readiness, and strong communication between anesthesia providers and hospital leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Management

  • Oversee daily operations of the anesthesia practice.
  • Implement and maintain departmental policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate anesthesia staffing coverage and daily OR assignments.
  • Optimize workflow, case throughput, and resource utilization.

Staffing & Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise anesthesia providers and support staff.
  • Manage performance evaluations, professional development, and corrective actions.
  • Coordinate provider schedules, call rotations, and PTO.
  • Promote a collaborative, high-performance team environment.

Compliance & Quality

  • Ensure compliance with CMS, Joint Commission, OSHA, and state regulations.
  • Support quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, and accreditation readiness.
  • Manage credentialing, privileging, and CME tracking.

Financial & Administrative Management

  • Assist in creating and managing department budgets.
  • Oversee anesthesia billing workflows, coding accuracy, and revenue cycle processes.
  • Monitor financial performance, productivity metrics, and cost-control efforts.
  • Oversee equipment procurement, inventory, and vendor relations.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Serve as liaison between providers, surgery departments, unit leadership, and hospital executives.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution and problem-solving across disciplines.
  • Support system upgrades, EMR optimization, and process improvements.

Essential Functions

  • Manage daily anesthesia operations to ensure safe, efficient care delivery.
  • Oversee provider staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Ensure all regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards are met.
  • Provide leadership and performance oversight for clinical and administrative staff.
  • Analyze operational and financial data to drive improvement.
  • Communicate effectively with anesthesia providers, hospital leadership, and clinical teams.
  • Resolve operational issues quickly and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and personnel information at all times.

Required Experience

  • 3–5 years of healthcare management experience, preferably in perioperative services, anesthesia services, surgery, or procedural areas.
  • Experience supervising clinical or administrative staff in a hospital, healthcare system, or medical practice.
  • Experience with scheduling, staffing, or operations management in a high-acuity or fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with workflow optimization, performance metrics, and quality improvement processes.
  • Experience with EMR systems and/or anesthesia documentation platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s preferred for large systems).
  • RN, CRNA, or another clinical background beneficial but not required, depending on facility.
  • 5 years of progressive leadership experience in anesthesia, perioperative services, or medical practice management.
  • Knowledge of anesthesia billing, coding requirements, and revenue cycle management.
  • Experience with Joint Commission surveys, compliance audits, and accreditation preparation.
  • Certification such as CMPE (Certified Medical Practice Executive), FACHE, or CPHQ is highly desirable.
  • Experience leading process improvement using Lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong background in data reporting, analytics, and operational dashboard creation.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
  • Light lifting of office materials or equipment (typically up to 20–25 lbs).
  • Ability to enter OR or procedural areas, including use of PPE when required.
  • Sufficient visual and auditory acuity for computer work, communication, and clinical environment assessments.

  • Emotional resilience when managing staff concerns, patient issues, or performance challenges.

Compensation: $75,000 - $90,000 annually, DOE


Location: Auburn Community Hospital · Anesthesia
Schedule: Full Time, Days, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, variable
