AUBURN CITY SCHOOLS

SCHOOL COUNSELOR - 220 CONTRACT DAYS

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Counselor Ed preferred from an accredited educational institution.
  • Certified by the State of Alabama in appropriate area.
  • Two years of prior teaching experience preferred.
  • Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of child development and especially of characteristics of students in the age group assigned. Knowledge of the prescribed curriculum. Knowledge of current educational research. Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology. Knowledge of learning styles and skill in using varied teaching methods to address student learning styles. Skill in oral and written communication with students, parents and others. Ability to plan and implement activities for maximum effectiveness. Ability to assess levels of student achievement effectively, analyze test results and prescribe actions for improvement. Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn. Ability to work effectively with peers, administrators and others.

REPORTS TO: Principal

JOB GOAL

As a member of the system’s counseling and guidance staff, the counselor provides a comprehensive counseling and guidance program for students; consults and collaborates with teachers, parents and staff to enhance effectiveness in helping students; and provides support to other school educational programs.

SUPERVISES: N/A

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • (1) Implements the school counseling and guidance program curriculum.
  • (2) Guides and counsels groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans.
  • (3) Consults with small groups and individual students.
  • (4) Consults and collaborates with teachers, staff and parents in understanding and meeting the needs of students.
  • (5) Refers students with problems and their parents to appropriate specialists, special programs, or outside agencies.
  • (6) Participates in activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school.
  • (7) Plans, evaluates and revises the counseling and guidance program.
  • (8) Pursues professional growth.
  • (9) Develops a system plan to include goals, objectives, and activities consistent with State Plan for program implementation and evaluation.
  • (10) Formulates goals consistent with local board of education philosophy and policies.
  • (11) Provides leadership in developing appropriate comprehensive counseling and guidance program activities.
  • (12) Coordinates, monitors and evaluates activities of a comprehensive program as a part of the total school program.
  • (13) Assists principals in annual counselor evaluations.
  • (14) Collects data that include program objectives and activities for an annual report to be submitted to the local superintendent and local board of education.
  • (15) Serves as a consultant to principals and counselors in the implementation of the statewide and local schools’ comprehensive counseling and guidance plans.
  • (16) Serves as consultant to principals and counselors in the areas of psychological services for individual students with unusual problems that appear to be beyond the scope of the local staff.
  • (17) Serves as liaison between local schools and community agencies.
  • (18) Plans and administers in-service training program for counselors and facilitates continuous program development and improvement.
  • (19) Serves as a representative of counselors on various committees/boards.
  • (20) Participates in the interview process and recommends personnel for counseling and guidance.
  • (21) Develops a plan and procedures for assignment of school counselors.
  • (22) Develops a consistent perception and common understanding of counseling and guidance functions and the role of the school counselor.
  • (23) Submits an annual budget to the local superintendent.
  • (24) Interprets to local schools the objectives of the system’s comprehensive counseling and guidance program and the procedures for utilizing guidance services.
  • (25) Establishes a systematic approach for making the counseling and guidance program visible at all levels.
  • (26) Develops a resource file containing the names of individuals and agencies that may provide support for counseling and guidance programs.
  • (27) Makes a provision for a system-wide counseling and guidance communications network.
  • (28) Complete other job duties and responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system’s approved compensation plan.

Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
