Major Responsibilities

  • He or she is responsible for the ‘first impression’ look of the patient unit or area where working each day. This includes high dusting, spot mopping corridors, cleaning baseboards and hand rails, keeping all stainless-steel shining, and reporting items that need further attention (such as floor maintenance or Facilities Management) to an Environmental Services Supervisor. Additionally, employees that work on an assigned clinical area will be familiar with the Satisquest ratings for not only that particular patient unit, but those for the entire department as well.
  • He or she is responsible for daily patient room cleaning on the unit or in the area where assigned each day. This includes, but is not limited to changing disposal can liners, dust/wet mopping floors, cleaning restrooms, high dusting, low dusting, wiping down furniture, disinfecting surfaces, etc.
  • The Environmentalist I is responsible for cleaning patient rooms where the patient has been dismissed in a timely manner. This includes, but is not limited to completely dusting the room’s surfaces, disinfecting and making the bed, cleaning the dry erase boards, scrubbing the ceramic surfaces (including toilet, sink and shower), ensuring that a Patient Guide, Environmental Services card and Gideon Bible are available in the room, mopping the entire floor, scrubbing baseboards if necessary, emptying and wiping out the refuse containers, wiping down the furniture, replenishing paper and soap supplies and emptying the sharps collection boxes when full.
  • He or she is responsible for responding to dirty beds (if working in a clinical area) in as timely a manner as possible and utilizing the Bed Tracking software to the fullest extent possible in order to facilitate getting another patient into the bed.
  • He or she is responsible for replenishing supplies throughout the patient unit or public area on an as-needed basis but using discretion. It is expected that supplies are used in a judicious manner.
  • If working in a clinical area, it is the expectation that each Environmentalist I accomplish his or her ‘morning work’ when starting his or her shift. This includes cleaning all of the ‘common areas’ on each patient unit, including public restrooms, elevator lobbies, nurses’ stations and break rooms. It is the expectation that all carpet is routinely vacuumed.
  • He or she is expected to use prescribed safety methods when cleaning any isolation rooms. These are determined by the Infection Control Department.
  • It is the expectation that when cleaning ancillary areas (i.e. trash rooms, Dirty Utility closets, med rooms, supply closets, etc.) each Environmentalist I dust mops, wet mops, empties the trash containers and also dusts all surfaces. When cleaning offices, it is the expectation that furniture is cleaned and dusted if free of paper and personal effects.
  • He or she is expected to attend daily shift meetings, bi-monthly supervisory meetings, and monthly department meetings with the purpose of communicating important information, changes, and hospital-wide strategic direction to all members of the Environmental Services Department.
  • It is expected that each Environmentalist I report unsafe conditions to his or her Supervisor in order to constantly make the hospital a safer environment. It is also expected that he or she report items that need repair or floors that need further attention to the Supervisor or to the Facilities Management Department, depending on the situation.
  • It is the expectation that each Environmentalist I practice outstanding customer service when interacting with any patient, visitor or staff member. He or she will be made aware of how these interactions influence our patient satisfaction ratings and will be held accountable to standards set forth by Administration and the Director of Environmental Services.
  • The Environmentalist I may be required to move to parts of the hospital where he or she is not normally located based on the judgment of the Supervisor, Assistant Director or Director of the Department. This decision will be based on the collective needs of the entire health system.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

Must be able to use visual near and distance acuity. Must have verbal ability to communicate in person and over the phone or radio. Must be able to assist co-workers in transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using good body mechanics. Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds, specific to the job class evaluation. Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and change from one position to the other rapidly. Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 pounds specific to job class evaluation. Must be able to tolerate high noise, busy atmospheres and noxious odors. Must be able to work in noisy environments and be self-directed to complete jobs as ordered. Must be able to remain calm under stressful situations. Must be able to assess and respond to multiple situations simultaneously. Must be able to assist co-workers in multiple overlapping tasks simultaneously. Must be able to prioritize job tasks and organize work space to be efficient and conducive to completing work tasks as assigned in a timely manner. If job class is identified as falling under POPE C, the individual must pass the cardiac recovery test.

Under direct supervision, the Environmentalist I maintain prescribed levels of cleanliness for assigned areas using approved chemicals, germicides, and equipment. He or she also follows prescribed schedules and procedures of the Environmental Services Department.
