Exercise Specialist assists clinical staff members in all areas to contribute to quality patient care. The Exercise Specialist provides specialized exercise programs to improve cardiovascular function, body composition, and physical strength. They’re responsible for the hands-on transfer / lift / ambulation/ range of motion and strengthening of patients within the acute care and rehab setting who need supervision while performing these activities. This role assists the patients in keeping their highest functioning level while in the hospital.

Major Responsibilities
- Must be able todemonstrateknowledge and skills necessary to provide careappropriate tothe age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
- Effective time management is a fundamental requirementforthis role. The incumbent mustutilizeassigned time and resources in a manner that ensures the accomplishment of departmentalobjectives,demonstratethe ability to prioritize tasks and reorganize workload in response to urgent or increased demands, and aid colleagues during periods of fluctuating census.

- Strong problem-solving abilities are expected, as the individual willbe responsible foractingwhenminor issues arise.
- Excellent organizational skills arerequired, including the management of supply ordering, receiving, and stocking; organizing,maintaining, cleaning, and storing equipment; and theappropriate managementof patient documentation (excluding the creation of patient care records).
- The role also demands caution and judgment when transporting patients, as well as effective communication with therapists, physicians, interdisciplinary team members, patients, and families in a mannerappropriate tothe population served.
Education
- Graduation from an accredited school or college withBachelorof Science in exercise science, exercise physiology or kinesiology,required.
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a hospital environment.
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
- Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.
