What are the responsibilities and job description for the Test Development Engineer position at atomicmachines?
About The Role:
We are seeking a Test Development Engineer with a strong electrical engineering background to join our growing Test team. At Atomic Machines, we are building a novel robotic manufacturing platform—the Matter Compiler™—from the ground up. This enables us to explore entirely new materials and processes, making possible a class of devices that could not be fabricated in a conventional fab environment. From a Test perspective, this means we design tests for devices with specifications exceeding those from currently available solutions, and integrate some of those tests into a fully automated production framework.
Test in the context of hardware/device development inherently requires a multidisciplinary approach. We define a test from initial specifications through the block diagram stage, design and build custom hardware as necessary, and integrate it into a complete system. Test development encompasses mechanical fixturing, circuit board design, firmware development, integration of existing equipment, and analysis of the resulting data.In addition to a strong electrical engineering background, the ideal candidate will bring strong first principles thinking, creativity, and a generalist bent. There are typically multiple approaches to developing any test, and navigating design / fabrication / results tradeoffs is where someone with a first principles approach will shine.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop novel test instrumentation from initial specification through validation
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams in device design, product development, and manufacturing to develop new classes of tests driven by customer and requirements
- Integrate off-the-shelf instrumentation with existing and custom tests.
- Design and build circuit boards for test instrumentation
- Design and build circuit boards to implement test functionalities and deploy them into our Matter Compiler architecture
- Document test instrumentation design and operating procedures.
- Transfer tests from development to production.
- Maintain Test development facilities.
What You’ll Need:
- A strong first-principles approach — able to challenge assumptions, decompose problems to fundamentals, and drive toward true root-cause solutions rather than pattern-matching.
- Demonstrated experience in full board development, spanning initial circuit concepts through fully debugged hardware, including:
- Deep understanding of analog and mixed-signal circuit design.
- Experience implementing analog system control using microcontrollers.
- Familiarity with hardware-level communication protocols.
- Ability to develop microcontroller code in C.
- Strong documentation skills for clear hardware handoff to system-integration teams.
- Proficiency with standard electronic test equipment.
- Experience developing instrumentation, including constructing and managing error budgets.
- Solid hands-on lab skills, including soldering, hardware build/test, and iterative refinement.
- BS in Electrical Engineering or Physics required (8–10 years of relevant experience); PhD in a hard science or engineering discipline strongly preferred (5 years of relevant experience).
Bonus Points For:
- High current (500A ) or high voltage (1kV ) systems
- Experience with a modern programming language (Python / Java / C# / Go)
- Experience using the STM32 microcontroller platform
- Experience with reliability or environmental test systems
- Developing systems for safe use by line technicians/operators
- Using Altium in a collaborative design environment
