Equipment Maintenance Technician

atomicmachines
Emeryville, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 10/2/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 12/2/2025
Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler™ technology platform. This platform enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by providing manufacturing processes and a materials library that are inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It unlocks MEMS manufacturing not only for device classes that could never be produced by semiconductor methods, but also for entirely new categories. Furthermore, this digital platform is fully programmable in the way 3D printing is digital—but whereas 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the Matter Compiler™ technology platform is a multi-process, multi-material system: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device—made possible only through the Matter Compiler™ technology platform—that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.

About the Role

Under the direction of the Equipment Supervisor, you will partner with Operations and Engineering to maintain and improve manufacturing equipment used in the production of state-of-the-art MEMS products.
A successful candidate will embrace our values and take ownership of the electro-mechanical performance of semi-automated and automated assembly equipment, assembly tools, CNC machines, gloveboxes, vision metrology platforms, and other critical systems.
You will be responsible for sustaining system functionality, performing scheduled preventive maintenance (PMs), responding to unscheduled equipment downtime, and conducting equipment qualification. You will also develop a detailed understanding of Fab processes, ensuring equipment meets or exceeds performance and process criteria.

Key Responsibilities

1. Equipment Maintenance & Performance

  • Own the electro-mechanical performance of manufacturing equipment (assembly tools, CNC machines, gloveboxes, vision metrology platforms, lasers, PVD systems, nitrogen generators, and compressors).
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and maintain accurate PM records.
  • Triage and repair unscheduled equipment downtime to minimize production impact.
  • Ensure equipment meets or exceeds process criteria through qualification and calibration.

2. Technical Expertise & Process Knowledge

  • Develop a detailed understanding of Fab processes and equipment functions.
  • Cross-train across various toolsets to expand maintenance coverage and flexibility.
  • Engage in issue recovery and continuous improvement (CIP) projects.
  • Maintain up-to-date calibration status for all equipment, escalating issues if overdue.

3. Documentation & Systems

  • Use company systems to order, return, and track spare parts inventory.
  • Maintain accurate, real-time documentation in the equipment database.
  • Maintain and update the inventory of high-pressure gas bottles.
  • Update and improve work instructions, PM checklists, and maintenance procedures.
  • Collect and share tool data to aid in troubleshooting and issue resolution.

4. Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with Operations and Engineering to support production needs.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with peers, equipment owners, and production staff.
  • Participate in equipment installation and bring-up activities, including facility requirement specifications and qualification testing.

5. Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance

  • Follow all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) procedures and requirements.
  • Properly handle, label, and manage hazardous and universal wastes in compliance with regulations and company policies.
  • Participate on the safety team, attend training, and respond to incidents in accordance with Emergency Response Team (ERT) requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7 years of experience in machine maintenance and facility support.
  • Strong hands-on experience with mechanical, electrical, PLC, pneumatic, hydraulic, and CNC systems.
  • Proven troubleshooting and repair skills across a wide range of equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to perform thorough inspections and maintenance.
  • Commitment to safety standards and best practices in technical environments.
  • Positive, solutions-oriented approach with flexibility in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Strong documentation skills for maintaining clear, concise, and accurate records.

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with gloveboxes in controlled environments.
  • Hands-on experience with physical vapor deposition (PVD) processes.
  • Familiarity with electrochemical machining (ECM) or laser machining technologies.
  • Advanced knowledge of CNC machining and control systems.
  • Direct experience programming PLCs.
  • Forklift operation experience.

Physical Requirements

In an 8-hour day, must be able to continually bend, squat, kneel, lift, twist, climb, reach, stand and walk; to use hands for repetitive pushing, pulling, and single grasp motion; and to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and to move objects in excess of 100 pounds.
