About Atlas Gunworks

Atlas Gunworks is an industry leader in the premium handgun market. Every Atlas gun is machined from billet aluminum and steel. We combine the art of hand metal working with our state-of-the-art, multi-axis CNC machine shop.

Position Summary

The CMM Programmer will be responsible for CMM Metrology at Atlas Gunworks and is accountable for the accuracy and repeatability of all measurements used in high precision manufacturing.

As a Subject Matter Expert in Dimensional Metrology, this position requires exceptional attention to detail and documentation skills. Additionally, the person in the role is expected to teach techniques and best practices to all levels of experience in the company.

As a part of the teams that support manufacturing, this role will be responsible for the policies and procedures that control metrology at Atlas Gunworks, and the associated compliance of the organization and its vendors to those documents.

Key Responsibilities

CMM Programming and Inspection

  • Own the programming, fixturing, and validation of all coordinate measuring machine (CMM) inspection routines and workflows.
  • Develop, debug, and maintain CMM programs (PC-DMIS, Calypso, MCOSMOS, or equivalent) for production parts, vendor parts, sub-assemblies, fixtures and tools.
  • Design and validate repeatable inspection fixtures that minimize operator influence and enable lights-out manufacturing.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and integrate new metrology hardware as production volume and part complexity grow.

GD&T

  • Serve as subject matter expert on ASME Y14.5 GD&T — and ensure Design for Inspection principles while interpreting, applying, and challenging tolerance schemes on engineering drawings and 3D models.
  • Partner with Design Engineering to ensure features are toleranced in a way that is functional, manufacturable, and inspectable.
  • Lead datum scheme reviews and develop inspection strategies that align measurement methodology with the part's functional datums.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related technical field — or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • 6–10 years of hands-on metrology experience in a precision machining, aerospace, medical device, firearms, or similarly tight-tolerance manufacturing environment.
  • Expert-level proficiency programming and operating CMMs (Zeiss, Hexagon, Mitutoyo, or equivalent) using PC-DMIS, Calypso, or MCOSMOS.
  • Deep, working command of ASME Y14.5 GD&T — able to read, write, audit, and defend tolerance schemes on complex parts.
  • Comfort working from 3D CAD models (SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent) and converting model data into inspection programs.
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication — capable of explaining a measurement decision to a machinist, an engineer, and an executive in the same afternoon.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Certified Calibration Technician (CCT), or equivalent professional certification.
  • Formal GD&T certification (ASME Y14.5 GDTP Senior Level, Tec-Ease, or Effective Training).
  • Familiarity with firearms components, 1911/2011 platforms, or other small-arms tolerancing conventions.
  • Experience standing up a metrology lab from scratch — environmental controls, equipment selection, calibration cycles, and lab-quality documentation.
  • Background working in or alongside an ISO 9001, AS9100, or ITAR-registered manufacturing environment.

Benefits

  • Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance
  • 401(k) plan and matching
  • Paid time off and sick time
  • Robust Holiday Calendar
  • Bonus Opportunities
