Purpose
Independently performs complex diagnostics, service repairs and maintenance work on customer and/or dealer-owned agricultural and turf equipment. May require some direction or guidance from the Service Manager, Service Location Manager, or Shop Foreman.
Responsibilities
- Performs diagnostics and repairs on John Deere equipment and technology
- Mentors Service Technician Trainees and Service Technicians
- Conducts or supports customer clinics
- Performs diagnostics and repairs in the field as required
- Accountable for billable time and assigned work orders
- Responsible for complete and thorough documentation of diagnostics and repairs performed on work orders and on time submittal of information
- May participate in JDU Service Training programs required for the development of skills and knowledge
- Operates and maintains vehicles, tools and equipment required to perform job responsibilities
- Maintains a clean work area and performs work in a neat and orderly fashion
- Follows all safety rules and regulations in performing work assignments
- Maintains current knowledge of John Deere and competitive products
- Participation in monthly branch and company on-call schedules as needed.

Physical Requirements:
Strength & Lifting
Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull 50–75 lbs; occasionally up to 100 lbs with assistance
- Handle heavy components such as tires, hydraulic parts, and engine components
Use hoists, cranes, and lifting devices safely
Regularly required to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods (8–10 hours/day)
- Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl under equipment
- Climb ladders, steps, and onto large machinery (tractors, combines, sprayers)
Work in confined or awkward positions when performing repairs
Manual Dexterity & Coordination
Operate hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment with precision
- Maintain steady hand-eye coordination for:
- Electrical diagnostics
- Hydraulic system repairs
Small component adjustments
Endurance & Stamina
Sustain physical effort throughout long shifts
- Perform repetitive motions such as:
- Wrenching
- Lifting
- Tool use
Handle peak-season overtime (planting/harvest periods)
Work Environment Tolerance
Ability to work in:
- Outdoor conditions (heat, cold, rain, mud, dust)
- Shop environments with noise, fumes, and moving equipment

- Oils, grease, fuel, and chemicals
Vibration from machinery and tools
Vision & Sensory Requirements
Close vision for detailed mechanical work
- Ability to:
- Read service manuals, schematics, and digital screens
- Distinguish colors (wiring, fluids, indicators)
Hearing ability to diagnose engine and mechanical issues
Maintain balance and awareness around:
- Moving equipment
- Elevated surfaces
- Heavy machinery
- Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

- Drive service trucks
- Travel to customer locations
Perform repairs in field conditions (uneven terrain, remote sites)
Experience, Education, Skills and Knowledge
- Experience performing service repairs; demonstrated experience consistently meeting performance metrics preferred
- Experience performing repairs and maintenance using special tools and equipment following Technical Manual procedures on machines of the Technician’s specialty
- Experience with the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems used in off road, construction, lawn, or heavy equipment
- Experience operating vehicles, tools, and equipment for diagnostic purposes
- Experience with basic computer functions; experience using Service ADVISOR™ or other computer based diagnostic repair tools preferred
- Experience working cooperatively in a team environment
- Experience communicating effectively verbally and in writing
- Must have an adequate toolset to perform job responsibilities
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience required; Associates degree preferred
- Valid DOT Medical Card or be to obtain one. Be able to maintain certification.
Valid driver’s license required
The pay range for this position is $20-$38 per hour based on experience
