GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Director of Safety is responsible for developing, implementing, directing, and continuously improving a comprehensive safety, health, environmental, and regulatory compliance program for Atlantic Municipal Utilities (AMU). This position provides strategic leadership and oversight of all safety-related activities across the electric and water departments, ensuring the protection of employees, contractors, customers, facilities, and the public. The Director of Safety will operate independently and have authority to recommend disciplinary actions for safety violations and to make recommendations that could affect staffing levels and working conditions.
The Director of Safety promotes a culture of safety excellence, regulatory compliance, hazard recognition, risk mitigation, and operational accountability while supporting the reliable delivery of electric and water services. This position must maintain confidentiality. Must adhere to AMU residency requirements.
Other pertinent requirements: Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations and utility industry safety practices. Working knowledge of electric generation, transmission, distribution, and system control operations. Working knowledge of water treatment and distribution system operations. Strong understanding of risk management and emergency response principles. Ability to analyze complex operational risks and develop practical solutions. Strong communication, leadership, and employee engagement skills. Ability to lead organizational change and foster a safety-first culture. Proficiency in safety management systems, investigations, reporting, and training development.
