SUMMARY:
The Claims Trainee develops the foundational knowledge, skills, and technical expertise necessary to become a Claims Adjuster through a structured training program, mentoring, and progressive claim handling responsibilities. The trainee will learn all aspects of property and casualty claims handling, including policy interpretation, coverage analysis, liability assessment, investigation techniques, reserving practices, customer service, claim documentation, and settlement procedures. Under the guidance of experienced claims professionals, the trainee will gain practical experience while providing support to the Claims Department and developing the competencies required for independent claim handling.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Must be able to clearly define systems and operational problems and draw valid conclusions and recommendations as to how to resolve them. Must possess the ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in written, oral, or diagram form. Reasoning involves dealing with problems involving several variables in standard situations. Must be capable of exercising sound judgment and maintaining confidentiality when handling sensitive company and customer information.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Claims Administration & Support
- Learn claims support functions including mail handling, claim setup, answering phones, and providing administrative support to adjusters.
- Develop proficiency in the company’s claims management systems and related technology platforms.
- Properly document claim activity and maintain accurate claim files.
- Maintain claim diaries and ensure timely follow-up on assigned tasks.
- Return phone calls and correspondence promptly and professionally.
- Provide excellent customer service to insureds, claimants, agents, attorneys, vendors, and other business partners.
- Learn to analyze, review, and interpret insurance policies to determine coverage applicability.
- Assist with gathering and reviewing statements, police reports, photographs, estimates, medical records, and other claim-related documentation.
- Develop an understanding of liability investigations and claim evaluation techniques.
- Learn to verify and evaluate property damage, bodily injury, and other covered losses.
- Assist with communications involving insureds, claimants, agents, attorneys, vendors, and independent adjusters.
- Observe and assist with field investigations as appropriate.
- Learn proper reserving principles and assist with establishing appropriate loss and expense reserves.
- Develop an understanding of settlement evaluation and negotiation techniques.
- Learn subrogation identification and recovery procedures.
- Gain exposure to salvage handling and total loss procedures.
- Become familiar with litigation management processes and claim escalation procedures.
- Shadow experienced adjusters during claim investigations, negotiations, and file reviews.
- Begin handling less complex claims and claim-related assignments under supervision as training progresses.
- Obtain and maintain required adjuster licenses where applicable.
- Participate in company-sponsored training and continuing education programs.
- Develop a working knowledge of applicable state laws and regulations governing claim handling.
- Perform other similar or related duties as assigned.
- Four-year degree from an accredited institution preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Coursework or background in insurance, business, risk management, criminal justice, finance, legal studies, or related fields preferred.
- Prior customer service experience preferred.
- Strong interest in developing a career in property and casualty claims.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to gather, organize, and evaluate information effectively.
