Reading Curriculum Specialist – Wardlaw

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

The Wardlaw School is dedicated to serving children with average to superior intelligence and mild to moderate language-based learning disabilities including dyslexia.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Reading Curriculum Specialist will lead and oversee all aspects of the school’s reading program, including assessment administration, student placement in reading groups, curriculum implementation, teacher coaching, and literacy intervention support. Coordinate and manage Orton-Gillingham and Wilson training programs, facilitate professional development for reading specialists and classroom teachers, and support instructional planning through data analysis and ongoing collaboration. Responsibilities include teaching a reading group, supporting admissions and placement testing, organizing school-wide reading assessments, and developing instructional resources to ensure effective, research-based literacy instruction across grade levels.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE JOB:

  • Oversee the school-wide reading assessment process, including student testing, data review, and reading group placement.
  • Lead and facilitate reading team meetings and collaborate with classroom and reading teachers to implement curriculum scope and sequence.
  • Support new faculty through orientation, instructional planning, assessment training, and resource selection.
  • Coordinate and oversee Orton-Gillingham and Wilson training programs, including coursework, practicum supervision, scheduling, communication, and teacher coaching.
  • Observe and coach teachers through instructional feedback cycles and model effective literacy strategies across grade levels.
  • Teach a reading group and maintain student progress reporting and family conference responsibilities.
  • Create and manage intervention and reading support schedules, including rotating reading Boost groups.
  • Support teachers with report writing, assessment analysis, and parent communication regarding student progress.
  • Organize and manage beginning- and end-of-year reading assessments, testing procedures, and student assessment materials.
  • Coordinate new student reading assessments and participate in admissions and placement decisions.
  • Complete annual reading group placements and instructional planning for the upcoming school year.
  • Compile and maintain instructional resources, assessments, and literacy materials for faculty use.
  • Represent the school professionally by presenting at local and national conferences, sharing our work and translating best practices in the Science of Reading for broader educational audiences.
Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in education or a related field.
  • Experience teaching elementary students (K–5), preferably in dyslexia-focused or language-based settings and across multiple grade levels.
  • Strong knowledge of structured literacy and math instruction for diverse learners.
  • Experience and professional development in instructional coaching, teacher mentorship, or leading instructional practice preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a teaching team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to provide an appropriate speech and language model for children
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development is required. Must attend language and early literacy training and other required training as specified by the program director.

SALARY: Salary is commensurate with credentials and experience.

Salary is commensurate with experience and credentials. This 190-day, full-time school position offers a generous benefits package, including health/dental/life/vision and long-term disability insurance; the School subsidizes health insurance premiums for staff and their families.
