ATHLETICS - HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL HEAD COACH

 

Job Goal:

To help each participating student-athlete achieve an appropriate level of skill, strategy, physical conditioning, and sportsmanship necessary for individual and team success. In addition, the coach will provide instruction that fosters moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a positive role model and motivator
  • Successful coaching experience (minimum of five years) and/or related experience
  • Proven ability to organize, supervise, and develop a comprehensive athletic program
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the sport
  • Established skill in the fundamental and technical aspects of basketball
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Ability to comply with the South Lake Schools Coaches Handbook and the District’s overall athletic philosophy
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent or designee may determine appropriate and acceptable
Performance Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Develop a sense of community that values and celebrates diversity among all participating student-athletes
  • Understand and comply with all rules and guidelines established by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) and South Lake Schools
  • Uphold the Athletes Code of Conduct and conduct oneself in accordance with the MHSAA Athletic Code for Coaches
  • Behave in an exemplary manner at all times and serve as a role model for student-athletes and coaching staff
  • Promote self-control and sportsmanlike conduct among athletes and coaches at all times
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of student-athletes at all practices, contests, and related activities
  • Ensure no student-athlete is left unsupervised or unattended during or after practices or contests
  • Verify with the Human Resources Department that all coaches, assistants, aides, guests, and volunteers (paid or unpaid) have proper clearance prior to participation
  • Follow all directives issued by District administrators
  • Establish positive working relationships with teaching staff to support students experiencing academic and/or emotional challenges
  • Teach and coach techniques and strategies that contribute to a successful athletic program
  • Organize and direct the overall basketball program
  • Attend required clinics, meetings, and professional development activities to remain current with MHSAA and league rules and procedures
  • Adhere to all established District and league rules pertaining to the sport
  • Organize, schedule, and supervise tryouts (as needed), practices, scouting, and summer camps
  • Implement injury prevention measures and follow established procedures, including parent notification and accident report completion
  • Verify student-athlete eligibility in collaboration with the Athletic Director, including registration, residency, physicals, and rosters
  • Monitor academic performance and eligibility of student-athletes on a regular basis
  • Provide the school principal and Athletic Director with a written copy of team rules prior to the start of the season and after any revisions
  • Distribute and review team rules with student-athletes and revise as appropriate based on team feedback
  • Promote respect for school property and athletic equipment, including proper care and use
  • Inventory, distribute, collect, and maintain District athletic equipment throughout the season
  • Prepare and submit equipment for reconditioning at the conclusion of the season
  • Evaluate game officials and submit required reports to the MHSAA
  • Arrange all team transportation through the Athletic Department
  • Accompany the team to all away contests by traveling on the team bus
  • Directly supervise student-athletes at both home and away contests
  • Secure school and District facilities following all practices and contests
  • Report game results to the media, school officials, and Athletic Director in a timely manner
  • Maintain positive public relations with media, booster organizations, parents, officials, volunteers, community members, students, and fans
  • Support student-athlete participation and success across all District athletic programs
  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district.
  • Employee shall properly implement Board Policy 3122, Policy 4122, and Policy 2260 on non-discrimination and shall comply with Federal and State laws and regulations, particularly Part 1 104 of Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (34 CFR) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
