Summary

Selectee responsible for planning, directing, supervising and coordinating ATF's industry operations programs and personnel within a designated geographical area. Serving as as an expert advisor to the Director of Industry Operations (DIO) for the assigned area and responds to the most complex issues/matters pertaining to regulatory field investigations and inspections.

The major duties of the Supervisory Industry Operations Investigator (Area Supervisor) position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serving as a key Industry Operations representative for assigned geographical area. Preparing and presenting briefings to the DIO and industry officials about regulatory matters. Conferring with Field Division management Bureau Headquarters personnel, other Area Supervisors, and officials of other government agencies with regard to issues or changes in legislation that affect assigned jurisdiction.
  • Evaluating the content of new or modified legislation for projected impact on Industry Operations programs.
  • Conducting presentations to civic, trade and industry organizations, conducts seminars on the latest regulatory matters, and confers with state and local officials, applicants for licenses and permits, industry members, the media, and interest groups.
  • Developing annual area work plans and office travel budget to accomplish set goals. Coordinates area assessments for planning activities.
  • Responsible for perfecting and submitting cases for division management and potential headquarters review.

The employees will report to the following IO offices: Atlanta VIII, Albuquerque II, Charlotte III, Dallas V (Lewisville, TX), El Paso II, Falls Church III, Fort Pierce II, Hartford II, McAllen II, New York VI, Oklahoma City I, Richmond II, San Antonio II, Sacramento II, Salt Lake City II and Tampa II.

Note: Area Supervisor for El Paso II will be located in either El Paso or Lubbock.

  • Must be U.S. Citizen or National
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31st 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.
  • May be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
  • You must be a current permanent Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives employee with competitive status or a CTAP/RPL eligible candidate.
  • Pass drug screening and subject to random drug test.
  • Suitable for Federal employment determined by background investigation.
  • You must meet all applicable time-in-grade requirements by the closing of this announcement.

MOBILITY PLAN: New employees hired pursuant to this vacancy announcement must sign a mobility agreement. The purpose of ATF's mobility policy is to enhance career development and progression, and achieve mission and business effectiveness. To accomplish these objectives, the mobility plan will facilitate the movement of employees through special short-term assignments or permanent reassignments throughout the Bureau. Applicants who decline to sign a mobility agreement, as required, will be removed from the hiring process. This is a non-bargaining unit position.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Supervisory Industry Operations Investigator (Area Supervisor) position at the GS-14 level, you must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-14 grade level, candidates must also have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-13) by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in resume.

Specialized Experience Must Include All Of

  • Conducting complex, sensitive, or far reaching investigations of firearms and explosives licensees/permittees; AND
  • Coordinating with division, government, and law enforcement agencies; AND
  • Managing or leading a team in law enforcement investigations; AND
  • Writing investigative reports and/or briefings.

A one-year probationary period is required for new supervisors and managers.
