Position: Assistant Controller
Location: Hybrid - New York City
Role Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated professional to join our finance and accounting team as an Assistant Controller. In this position, you will play a key role in the accounting function for our company on both a Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) basis and assist with all financial and regulatory reporting requirements. The ideal candidate will have a background in insurance accounting, a strong work ethic, and a proactive approach to problem solving.
This position requires working onsite at our Midtown Manhattan office three days per week as part of a hybrid schedule.
Responsibilities
- Manage the accounting close process on both a GAAP and SAP basis, ensuring timely and accurate reporting
- Implement new accounting standards and updates, ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements
- Analyze monthly and quarterly fluctuations to identify and explain key drivers
- Prepare, track and record transactions involving highly sensitive data (such as payroll, and internally developed software cost)
- Develop and maintain a short-term liquidity forecast to manage operational cash needs and investment opportunities
- Support and participate in a general ledger system conversion, ensuring data accuracy and operational continuity
- Ensure the accuracy and consistency of the data presented in GAAP and statutory insurance reporting schedules
- Supervise and support GAAP and STAT financial audits of our reporting entities, working closely with external auditors and internal departments
- Develop and enhance the internal controls structure associated with areas of responsibility
- Collaborate with the Controller to review, update and implement policies and procedures geared towards driving improvement and efficiency
- Participate in ad-hoc analysis and special projects to support the broader goals of the finance and accounting department
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
- CPA certification
- 5 years of progressive experience in insurance accounting (both GAAP and SAP)
- Experience in the insurance industry – a plus
- Strong understanding of GAAP and SAP insurance accounting principles and regulatory reporting requirements
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments
- Leadership experience, including supervising and developing staff members
- Must work onsite at the Midtown Manhattan office three days per week as part of a hybrid work schedule.
