What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrical Engineer-Substation Services position at ATC?
Bring your positive energy to ATC! We’re looking for a Sr. Substation Services Engineer who pairs substation knowledge with a customer service mindset. In this role, you’ll lead standards efforts, translate technical information into practical applications, and provide dependable support for engineering, maintenance, commissioning, and construction—helping ensure our substation assets remain safe, cost effective, and reliable for the communities we serve.
What you’ll do
- Drive standards excellence. Lead the creation and revision of substation design standards, template drawings, specifications, guides, and technical aids; gather input, build consensus, and communicate updates that elevate consistency and clarity.
- Be a supporting resource. Provide timely support for engineering, maintenance, commissioning, and construction teams; support problem solving and convert findings into actionable recommendations.
- Advance our asset performance. Evaluate vendors and factory qualifications, partner with Asset Management and Supply Chain, and support development of pilots that introduce new technologies and provide long term value.
- Champion continuous improvement. Identify process enhancements across engineering, procurement, and construction to boost quality, efficiency, and consistency.
- Lead with stewardship and accountability. Take pride in the assets assigned to you by actively guiding their performance, condition, and lifecycle.
What you’ll bring
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering preferred, other combinations of education and experience considered.
- Licensure: Wisconsin and/or Michigan PE is beneficial, but not required.
- Experience: 5 years in substation design, equipment specification, or standards development; field/maintenance/commissioning/construction support experience is a plus.
- Technical depth: Foundational knowledge in one or more areas of substation physical or electrical design—such as grounding, equipment application, control house layouts, or constructability/maintainability—and/or familiarity with any of the major substation equipment (e.g., circuit breakers, disconnect switches, power transformers, instrument transformers, capacitors/reactors, auxiliary systems). Candidates are not expected to know all areas, but strength in several is valuable.
- Standards savvy: Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., IEEE, NESC, NERC) and utility engineering practices; adept at documentation, calculations, drafting review, and standardization.
- Professional strengths: Clear, structured communicator; collaborative team player; analytical, decisive, and field aware; follows through on commitments and keeps stakeholders informed.
