Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough patient assessments including vital signs, physical examinations, and detailed history-taking to establish accurate clinical pictures.
- Administer medications and injections safely, following strict aseptic techniques and medication protocols.
- Manage IV infusions and perform venipuncture for blood draws or medication delivery with precision.
- Provide acute pain management tailored to individual patient needs while monitoring for adverse reactions.
- Utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner for accurate documentation of patient care activities.
- Assist with complex procedures including catheterizations, suturing, tube feeding management, and ventilator support when necessary.
- Coordinate discharge planning by educating patients on post-hospital care, medication regimens, and follow-up appointments.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across specialties such as cardiology (including cardiac catheterization), infectious disease care, behavioral health, geriatrics, pediatrics, and hospice & palliative medicine to ensure comprehensive patient management.
- Participate in triage activities in urgent care or emergency room settings to prioritize patient needs efficiently.
- Maintain strict infection control standards and adhere to HIPAA regulations to safeguard patient confidentiality.
- Support patients with developmental disabilities or memory care needs by applying specialized approaches that promote comfort and understanding.
- Perform laboratory specimen collection/processing and manage diagnostic evaluations including sonography or medical imaging as required.
- Engage in continuous learning about ICD coding (ICD-9/ICD-10), CPT coding, and other medical documentation practices to ensure compliance with healthcare standards such as NCQA standards.
Qualifications
- Valid RN license in good standing with current state requirements.
- Proven experience in medical-surgical nursing within hospital or outpatient settings; ICU or Level I Trauma Center experience highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, and medical terminology relevant to adult patient care.
- Hands-on experience with EMR/EHR systems such as Epic or Cerner; familiarity with Athenahealth or eClinicalWorks is a plus.
- Experience in the Medical/Surgical setting with cardiac monitoring required. Experience in an ED is required. This is a small unit/facility (Critical Access Hospital); rural experience is preferred.
- Must be able to work independently/Hit the ground running!
- Competency in advanced skills, including IV insertion, phlebotomy, sterile processing techniques, airway management (including ventilator support), and specimen collection/processing.
- Ability to perform complex procedures such as spinal taps or gastrostomy tube management confidently.
- Experience working with diverse populations, including pediatrics (neonatal ventilator knowledge), geriatrics (memory/dementia/dementia care), behavioral health patients, or those requiring long-term care such as assisted living or nursing homes.
- Critical care experience, including ICU or trauma medicine, is highly valued; familiarity with trauma medicine protocols is advantageous.
- Knowledge of infection control practices aligned with hospital standards; experience managing infectious disease cases is beneficial.
- Excellent communication skills for effective patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration.
