Key Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of medical underwriters.
- Manage daily underwriting operations for small group health insurance business.
- Oversee new business, renewals, eligibility reviews, rescission reviews, and policy issuance.
- Make final underwriting, risk, and rate determination decisions on complex cases.
- Establish performance expectations, productivity goals, and quality standards.
- Review underwriting reports, medical cost data, and renewal activity to support business decisions.
- Partner with sales teams, agents, general agents, and program managers to ensure excellent service and communication.
- Monitor underwriting accuracy, compliance, and consistency across the team.
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
- Maintain and update underwriting guidelines, procedures, and documentation.
- Serve as Acting Director of Underwriting when needed.
Must-Have Experience
- 3 years of small group medical underwriting experience.
- Prior Underwriting Manager, Supervisor, or Team Lead experience with direct reports.
- Database underwriting experience.
- Experience underwriting groups ranging from 2-125 employees.
- Strong understanding of medical underwriting principles, risk assessment, and rate development.
- Experience reviewing and approving renewals, new business, and eligibility determinations.
- Proven ability to make sound underwriting and risk decisions.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including reporting and data analysis.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience within a health insurance carrier, TPA, or employee benefits organization.
- Experience managing external or contract underwriters.
- Process improvement and workflow optimization experience.
- Ability to step into leadership responsibilities when needed.
- Interest in long-term career growth into a Director-level position.
