This Assistant Controller role supports the Chief Accounting Officer and leads the day-to-day accounting operations for a high-volume, multi-entity retail environment. The position oversees core accounting functions, drives process improvements, supports month-end and year-end close, and serves as a key leader across financial reporting, compliance, audit coordination, and team management.
Responsibilities
This position operates in an office environment within a high-volume, multi-entity retail organization. The role follows a Monday through Friday schedule, typically from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You will work extensively with ERP systems and advanced Microsoft Excel, as well as reporting and analytics tools, while collaborating closely with operations, purchasing, advertising, real estate, e-commerce, and store leadership teams

The pay range for this position is $92000.00 - $110000.00/yr.

Job Description
This Assistant Controller role supports the Chief Accounting Officer and leads the day-to-day accounting operations for a high-volume, multi-entity retail environment. The position oversees core accounting functions, drives process improvements, supports month-end and year-end close, and serves as a key leader across financial reporting, compliance, audit coordination, and team management.
Responsibilities
- Lead daily accounting operations across financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, audit support, and tax compliance.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, management reports, variance analyses, reconciliations, and closing entries.
- Oversee external financial and sales/use tax audits and serve as a primary point of contact for auditors.
- Provide hands-on leadership for a large accounting team, including mentoring, coaching, performance management, and prioritization of department workflows.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, and written policies while identifying and implementing process improvements.
- Partner cross-functionally with operations, purchasing, advertising, real estate, e-commerce, and store leadership to support business needs and initiatives.
- Support periodic physical inventory activities and help standardize reporting tools, analytics, and templates for the broader accounting function.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership of accounting teams.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
- Proven experience building and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with ERP systems.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including lookups, queries, and pivot tables.
- Hands-on experience with financial statements, journal entries, general ledger, accounts receivable, and broader accounting operations.
- Prior experience in a retail or high-volume multi-location environment.
- Experience supporting tax compliance, external audit activity, and multi-state operations.
- Experience with data analysis, reporting tools, and process improvement initiatives.
- Ability to operate in a hands-on leadership role while balancing strategic oversight with day-to-day execution.
