Summary: The Vice President for Business Development is a new position at ASTHO, and will serve as a member of the executive leadership team. In this exciting and important new role, the VP for Business Development will serve as a leader and collaborator responsible for guiding, developing, and implementing business development efforts, with the overarching goal to increase and expand revenue diversification to support the vision, mission, and goals of the organization. More specifically, the Vice President for Business Development is responsible for leading and coordinating efforts to drive long-term growth and revenue diversification by identifying, developing, and executing market expansion opportunities, innovative business models, and strategic partnerships. This role requires a strategic, experienced, and visionary leader who can align business development initiatives with organizational goals, foster high-value relationships, and deliver measurable impact on revenue and market positioning. A successful candidate will be able to effectively promote internal buy-in and collaboration by working with team members across ASTHO and defining internal processes necessary for the successful adoption and implementation of business development initiatives across ASTHO.

Location: Remote

Salary Range: $179,000 - $240,000

Principal Functions:

  • Strategic Planning & Execution
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive business development strategy aligned with ASTHO’s vision, mission and goals, in close coordination with senior leadership of the organization
    • Identify emerging market trends, competitive landscapes, and growth opportunities
    • Oversee execution of short and long term strategic plans to diversify revenue and increase financial capital through relevant market expansion
    • Work collaboratively with leaders across the organization to ensure alignment with organization’s mission and vision, build on internal expertise, and define internal processes necessary for successful implementation
    • Assist and provide expertise in the establishment of internal processes and infrastructure to facilitate, promote, and track business development activities
  • Market Expansion
    • Lead efforts to diversify and expand revenue to help support the mission and goals of the organization. Areas of consideration for market expansion and revenue growth could include, but are not limited to: expansion of consulting/service models to support members and other key partners, philanthropy / fund raising, social impact / venture capital, public-private partnerships, mergers / acquisitions, strategic conference expansion. Initial prioritization would be set by business development plan in coordination with organization leadership.
    • Provide business development leadership and expert knowledge in efforts to expand consultative services to support members and other key partners/organizations, as well as strategic expansion of annual conference
    • Efficiently conduct market analyses to inform decision-making and prioritize opportunities specific to philanthropic initiatives, public-private partnership, social impact / venture capital option, and mergers/acquisitions
    • Evaluate various approaches to revenue diversification in a framework that considers impact, effort, and risk, as well as alignment of organizational mission and goals
  • Revenue Growth, Diversification & Performance Metrics
    • Establish initial benchmarks and iterative KPIs and performance metrics to track success of business development initiatives
    • Collaborate with leadership, finance and operations teams to ensure feasibility, profitability and scalability of new ventures
  • Cross-Functional Leadership and Coordination
    • Partner with leadership, finance, and operations teams to ensure seamless execution of strategic initiatives, development of necessary internal processes and infrastructure, and supporting change management efforts to promote staff buy-in
    • Effectively communicate and collaborate with internal ASTHO teams to promote buy-in, awareness, and internal culture change critical to success
    • Mentor and supervise a high-performing business development team
    • Leverage and integrate existing mission-aligned initiatives that are scalable and aligned with the strategic business development plan
  • Strategic Partnership Development
    • Build and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders, including partners, and industry leaders
    • Negotiate and structure complex deals, joint ventures, and alliances that drive mutual value, in close coordination and collaboration with organizational leadership

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, economics, or related field (Master's degree in business administration, or other relevant, related discipline, preferred)
  • A minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in business / strategic development and portfolio management and growth
  • Successful experience with evaluating market expansion opportunities, developing, and overseeing execution of strategic business development plans
  • Successful experience in leading efforts towards market expansion and revenue diversification, including establishment of public-private partnerships, social impact / venture capital arms, and/or mergers / acquisitions
  • Experience working for or directly with non-profit and / or member organizations strongly preferred
  • Experience with and knowledge of the Public Health private and public sectors preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex assignments autonomously
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to work collaboratively
  • Expert attention to detail
  • Ability and willingness to travel
