ABOUT ASI
ASI is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and operates with a small staff of ~14 people. The majority of operations are outsourced, so this role carries significant scope and visibility. You'll manage real lines of business — Group Life & Health Insurance, Professional Liability, a Captive Insurance Company, and more — without the bureaucracy of a large corporate environment. WHERE YOU'LL WORK
Our DC office is centrally located and easily accessible by Metro, bus, and major commuter routes — no car required. This is a hybrid role with approximately 3 days in the office per week.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
This role is more than a title upgrade. NASW Assurance Services, Inc. (ASI) is looking for a hands-on finance leader who wants to own something — not just manage it. As our Director of Finance & Controller, you'll be the financial backbone of two mission-driven organizations that serve America's social work profession. You'll work closely with the CEO and a lean, collaborative team where your work actually moves the needle. - Full-cycle accounting: general ledger, AP/AR, reconciliations, journal entries, and cash management in QuickBooks and Bill.com
- Monthly and year-end close, financial statements, and variance analysis
- Budget development, forecasting, and financial modeling
- Board and executive reporting — you'll own the financials that leadership and the Board of Directors rely on
- Audit, tax, and regulatory coordination with external partners
- Banking, treasury, and investment account management
- Process improvement and financial systems ownership — real runway to modernize and build
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5 years of progressive accounting/finance experience
- Strong GAAP knowledge and financial statement expertise
- Comfort being both the analyst and the one processing the transaction
- Clear, confident communication with non-finance stakeholders
- Preferred (but not required to apply)
- CPA or active progress toward certification
- Experience in insurance, financial services, or regulated environments
- Background in nonprofit, association, or multi-entity settings
- Familiarity with QuickBooks, Bill.com, or similar tools

Initially, the Director of Finance & Controller will be highly involved in daily accounting operations while establishing strong financial processes, controls, and reporting capabilities.

COMPENSATION
