Job Title: Staff Development Coordinator (RN)

Position Type: Full-Time - rotating on-call
Position Summary:
The Staff Development Coordinator (SDC) is a Registered Nurse responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating staff education and professional development programs within an acute psychiatric hospital setting. This includes managing orientation, annual competencies, ongoing training, and performance improvement initiatives to support patient safety, regulatory compliance, and high-quality behavioral health care. The SDC also oversees staff file maintenance and reporting related to training and quality metrics.
Key Responsibilities:
Orientation & Onboarding
- Develops and delivers a structured orientation program for new clinical and non-clinical staff, focusing on psychiatric care, crisis prevention/intervention, trauma-informed care, and hospital policies.
- Ensures timely completion of mandatory training including CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention), CPR, suicide risk assessment, de-escalation techniques, and HIPAA, etc.
- Partners with HR and nursing leadership to ensure a smooth onboarding experience that promotes staff retention and preparedness.
Ongoing Staff Education
- Conducts needs assessments and develops ongoing education programs for nurses, mental health technicians, and other frontline staff.
- Coordinates training on behavioral health topics, including psychiatric diagnoses, psychotropic medications, risk management, and therapeutic communication.
- Ensures staff compliance with competency evaluations, licensure requirements, and continuing education expectations.
Staff File Maintenance & Documentation
- Maintains accurate and complete training records for all hospital staff, including licensure, certifications (e.g., BLS, CPI), and mandatory in-service attendance.
- Audits training documentation regularly to ensure readiness for Joint Commission, CMS, and state regulatory surveys.
- Tracks and ensures timely renewal of RN and other clinical staff credentials.
Quality & Performance Improvement
- Collects and analyzes training-related data tied to quality indicators (e.g., patient restraints, elopement, adverse events, readmissions).
- Participates in and contributes to QAPI (Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement) initiatives.
- Develops training interventions in response to identified trends in incident reports or performance metrics.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensures all training and staff development activities comply with The Joint Commission, CMS, and state mental health regulations.
- Prepares documentation and supports compliance inspections, audits, and investigations related to staff education and training standards.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Acts as an educational resource for clinical staff, supporting professional development and evidence-based psychiatric practice.
- Collaborates closely with department heads, quality management, and risk management to address training needs and clinical priorities.
- Serves as a mentor to staff and promotes a culture of safety, learning, and clinical excellence.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in a behavioral health or psychiatric acute care setting.
- Experience with staff education, clinical training, or mentoring.
- Must be willing to participate in a rotating on-call schedule
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or higher.
- Certification in psychiatric-mental health nursing (PMH-BC) or equivalent preferred.
- CPR Instructor Certification or willingness to obtain.
- Familiarity with Joint Commission standards and psychiatric hospital operations.
Key Competencies:

- Strong leadership, communication, and teaching skills.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple educational programs simultaneously.
- Skilled in Microsoft Office, EHR systems, and learning management systems (LMS).
