Nursing Quality & Education Manager (RN)

Department: Nursing / Clinical Education
Reports To: CEO and Director of Nursing at Indianapolis and Anderson Hospital
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Type: Full-Time

Location: The role requires regular on-site travel, alternating between two days in Indianapolis and three days in Anderson, alternating each week.

On Call: Participates in an as-needed on-call schedule, providing direct clinical support on the nursing floor to cover staff PTO and respond to emergencies, in collaboration with the CEO and DON.

Position Summary

The Nursing Quality & Education Manager (RN) is responsible for coordinating nursing quality initiatives, staff education, and competency validation within an acute geriatric psychiatric hospital setting. This role supports the Director of Nursing in ensuring compliance with CMS Conditions of Participation, Joint Commission standards, and state regulations, while advancing Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI), regulatory readiness, and continuous performance improvement.

The Director of Nursing retains overall authority for nursing services; this role serves as a key operational and educational partner.

Key Responsibilities Orientation & Staff Education

  • Develops and oversees structured orientation programs for clinical and non-clinical staff.
  • Ensures completion of required education including CPI, CPR/BLS, suicide risk assessment, de-escalation, trauma-informed care, HIPAA, and age-specific safety training.
  • Provides ongoing education addressing geriatric psychiatric diagnoses, dementia-related behaviors, psychotropic medications, and therapeutic communication.
  • Partners with HR and nursing leadership to promote onboarding success and staff retention.

Competency Assessment & Validation

  • Coordinates initial and ongoing competency assessments for nurses, mental health technicians, and frontline staff.
  • Ensures staff demonstrate competency prior to independent practice.
  • Addresses identified competency gaps in collaboration with nursing leadership.

Quality & Performance Improvement (QAPI)

  • Collects, trends, and analyzes nursing quality indicators including falls, restraints, seclusion, medication safety, injuries, elopement, and behavioral emergencies.
  • Participates in root cause analyses, corrective action planning, and follow-up monitoring.
  • Develops targeted education in response to identified quality trends and incident data.

Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness

  • Supports readiness for CMS, Joint Commission, and state surveys.
  • Prepares nursing-related documentation, tracers, and education support for surveys and audits.
  • Assists with post-survey corrective action plans related to staff education and quality.

Staff File Maintenance & Documentation

  • Maintains accurate staff training records including licensure, certifications, competencies, and in-service attendance.
  • Tracks renewals for RN and other clinical credentials.
  • Audits files regularly to ensure regulatory compliance.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serves as an educational resource and mentor to clinical staff.
  • Collaborates with nursing leadership, quality, risk management, medical staff, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, learning, and evidence-based psychiatric practice.

Qualifications (required)

  • Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Experience in staff education, quality improvement, or nursing professional development.
  • Willingness to participate in a rotating on-call schedule.

Preferred

  • Certification in Psychiatric–Mental Health Nursing (PMH-BC).
  • CPR/BLS Instructor certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience in an acute psychiatric hospital setting.
  • Familiarity with Joint Commission and CMS behavioral health standards.
  • Psychiatric OR hospital nursing experience.

Key Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of geriatric psychiatric care, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed practice.
  • Quality improvement, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication, leadership, and teaching abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, EHR systems, and Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Work Conditions

This leadership role may occasionally involve direct patient care and rounding with nursing and medical staff. Physical requirements include standing and walking for extended periods, lifting and assisting patients as needed, and exposure to healthcare environments. Proper safety training and equipment are provided.
